The Return of Latin and Why It Matters

What value might there be in teaching a congregation to sing Latin hymns or Mass responses? First, Latin is the language of the Church. Papal encyclicals are written in Latin. Prayers and hymns in Latin serve to unite the faithful, reminding us that we are part of a universal Church whose members join us in prayer. Singing and praying in Latin, we echo the prayers of our fellow Catholics throughout the world, and of our forefathers in the faith from past generations.

When I hear the Agnus Dei in Latin, I still have to try and translate it mentally
to English in my mind. Latin is the official language of the Church having to do
with documents. However, it's not the mandate in Mass celebrate as the ordinary
throughout the Church.

At my parish, during Lent and Advent, the Mass parts are usually sung in Latin. It's become almost second nature to me.

That's great for you, but there are many others like me who have to try and translate Latin into English in their minds.
It removes them from prayer. Some are not capable of translating the words. We're supposed to serve the least of our
brothers and sisters.
