  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The prince’s visit is his first to the United States since 2018. That year, Saudi agents killed the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Khashoggi, who was a Saudi national and critic of the regime, was also a U.S. resident.

Bin Salman has denied ordering Khashoggi’s killing.

[At the time (during Trump 1.0), the CIA fingered 'MBS' as being behind the plot, but President Trump (then and now) doesn't let that get in the way of business.]

yup

And working with them is helping middle east peace and the rebuilding of Gaza

Trump on UN approving US plan for the future of Gaza: ‘Congratulations to the World’

President Trump praised the United Nations (UN) Security Council for approving a U.S.-based plan to rebuild Gaza on Monday.
The 15-member council voted 13-0 in favor of the resolution, with Russia and China abstaining.
“Congratulations to the World on the incredible Vote of the United Nations Security Council,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform Monday afternoon. The president added that the vote “will go down as one of the biggest approvals in the History of the United Nations, will lead to further Peace all over the World, and is a moment of true Historic proportion!”
The resolution authorizes the Board of Peace, an international coalition that Trump said Monday he will chair, to oversee the rebuilding of the war-torn enclave.

“Things happen,” Trump said when asked about Khashoggi’s killing. Khashoggi, who was critic of the regime, was also a U.S. resident.
If Trump could kill his most troublesome critics without serious consequence, I don't think that he would hesitate.

Well yeah, but he was also a reporter at the Washington Post, so....murdered and dismembered. Now please bring your level of rhetoric down!

???

Trump well understands that a reporter for the Washington Post was murdered and that the crown price was responsible. In the scheme of Trump's politics this fact was not more important than the benefits that he sees from being an ally instead of an enemy.

Biden has a different view.
=========
Trump's POLICY is to not consider the internal affairs of another country when considering his and the US relationship with that country. Over the years, Democrats have had a very different policy.

As individuals we can afford to be morally outraged that a US reporter was murdered by a foreign leader. We can even vote against a president that refuses to shun that country. Some might have us shun Israel for killing US aid workers.
===============
HOWEVER, it is NOT unreasonable to understand that Trump's relationship with Saudi Arabia has been a PLUS for the US and a huge plus for peace in the Middle East.

If you wish, you can choose to believe that Biden or Harris would have had the same cooperation in leading a peace effort in the Middle East. Personally, I don't think so. It is the Abraham Accords and the possibility of Saudi Arabia recognizing Israel that is leading us to possible eace in the Middle East, at least for now.

Some Americans have benefited a lot more than others.

The Trump Organization has multiple active projects in Saudi Arabia, including Trump Towers in both Jeddah and Riyadh.

And on the eve of bin Salman’s visit, the Trump Organization announced plans a new project with their Saudi-linked development partners, Dar Global, in the Maldives set to open in 2028.

Last month, the Trump Organization also announced plans for a Trump Plaza to be built in Saudi Arabia, complete with “a vibrant green spine inspired by Central Park that brings Manhattan-style vibrancy to the heart of Jeddah.”

Trump has also brokered ties with LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed golf league launched to rival the PGA. His U.S. golf courses have hosted several LIV golf tournaments, and earlier this year, Trump attended a Liv Golf dinner at his Doral property in Miami.

Dar pumped more than $20 million into the Trump Organization’s coffers last year in licensing fees, financial disclosures show, including more than $15 million into a Delaware-based company called DT Marks KSA, an acronym for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The fuller quote is worse. Per atrupar

"You're mentioning someone [referring to Khashoggi or Charlie Kirk, I'm not sure which] that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he [points to MBS] knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

Yeah, I think that Khashoggi’s being a WaPo reporter was not an impediment to any business dealings with his murderer.
Biden has a different view.
One would hope so.

Yup

Perhaps you think that Trump should have taken Biden's moral high ground and given up on peace in the Middle East, as Biden did.
============
Let's be very, very clear.

In both terms, Trump is doing more to bringing us closer to peace in the Middle East than anyone since Jimmy Carter.

FIRST TERM
The Abraham Accords were a huge, huge move forward. Arab countries were finally accepting Israel's right to exist as a country. Also, as a side discussion the Arabs and Israel agreed that the enemy was Iran and the terrorists that they financed throughout the region. Trump made the Arabs and Israel see common cause. Trump also had them understand the business benefits from having peace between Israel and the Sunni Arabs.

IN BETWEEN
crickets from Biden
Hamas started a war
crickets from Biden

SECOND TERM
Trump again made peace in the Middle East his #1 priority. Trump supported all of Israel's efforts to remove the terrorist threats in the region and their efforts to greatly disable Iran. Trump then got the Arabs to look the other way as Israel continued to be aggressive in killing Arab terrorists and also so many Palestinian citizens in Gaza.

Trump finally bombed Iran! He then got Israel to agree to a peace deal and to implement the first steps.

Interesting that ABC asks this question when it's parent company has no qualms about doing business in Saudi Arabia

And he probably wouldn't lose any voters.

The question was about the murder of Khashoggi. Red herring.
