  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Fewer international tourists are visiting the U.S. — economic losses could be ‘staggering,’ researchers estimate

Typically, Canadians will flood the streets of Seattle during the summer, but Koenen, who runs Seattle Free Walking Tours (where people pay what they can), said Canadian tourists are almost gone. Streets look emptier to him.
Is it at all possible that part of the reason is the pathetic strength, or lack there of, of the Canadian Dollar

Everything is almost 40% more in the US because of the weakness of their economy.

That $125.00 Hotel room costs them 175 canadian.

No, because the situation is not significantly different than it has been for the past 3 years.

Indeed, the CAD has strengthened against the dollar since Trump took over. And that's the period over which Canadian tourism has cratered.

Only if you think the coincidental name of dollar is meaningful.

Everything is not "35% more expensive" in England because the pound is 35% bigger than the dollar.

Canadians are still coming to Vermont, a lot of them mention they liked how they protested JD Vance’s vacation so effectively that he left early, but numbers are still down. The thing people mention is they don’t trust that they won’t get picked up and deported even though they’re here legally, they don’t want to deal with the hassle and anxiety, so they aren’t traveling much further than an hour or two from the border. Usually at this time of year, we have several tour buses a day down from Canada. This year we’ve had two. New Hampshire is *really* feeling it.

That make zero sense sense. A Canadian Dollar is worth 38% less than an American dollar look at the link

The American dollar is worth .74 pounds. And it shows everytime I am there.

It has nothing to do with size, it has everything to do with value.

My main point about the CAD not changing much against the dollar (except recently as Trump's actions have weakened the dollar) still stands as an answer to your original question.

But on this point, perhaps an example helps where we can compare to a product with a more or less stable price in either country.

Canadian Bob MacKenzie has an ounce of precious metal, and before his upcoming trip to the US, he sells it in Canada for its value of CAD 1380.

He crosses the border and converts his CAD 1380 into USD 1000.

In the US, he buys an ounce of that precious metal for USD 1000.

[If the price wasn't US$1000, then people could make money by simply buying precious metals in one country and selling them across the border.]

All of these monetary values are the same, regardless of the numeral. Instead of re-buying the precious metal, he could have bought other things on his trip to the US, and his overall buying power would have stayed the same. Prices of some things, like gasoline, are very different in the two countries, but this has nothing to do with the currency. Indeed Bob would be able to afford a lot more gas in the US than he could at home.

It is only changes in this exchange rate that can make things relatively more or less costly. And the exchange rate has not changed much for the past few years. (except Bidenomics strengthening the dollar right at the end of his term and Trumpomics weakening the dollar over Trump 2.0 so far.)

They are literally telling us the reason.

"Canadians calling to cancel their tours “explicitly told me that it was because of the policies and the behavior of our current president,” he said."

Polite people know when their presence isn’t welcome and stay away.

That sounds swell, we should try that maybe, once.
See what “happens”?

I don’t blame anybody for not coming. I barely want to be here right now myself.

‘They just don’t come’: What’s making L.A.’s tourism tumble

  • Tourist arrivals to Los Angeles fell this summer, reversing years of growth and dealing a severe blow to the city’s economy.
  • January wildfires, June immigration raids and Trump’s tariff threats created a perfect storm that scared off international visitors, especially Canadians.
  • Hollywood Boulevard’s foot traffic dropped, and businesses struggled with higher wholesale costs for their souvenirs due to increased tariffs.
Tourist arrivals fell by close to 10% this [summer] season, according to the latest numbers from Visit California.

Of all the state’s international travelers, the most significant absence was from Canadian tourists. Arrivals from visitors from up north fell around 30% in June and July.

Last year, the state’s tourism hit a new high, with visitors spending $157.3 billion, up 3% from 2023, and creating 24,000 jobs, according to a 2024 economic impact report from Visit California.

Canadian boycott of US travel shows no sign of slowing

October marked the 10th straight month of decline in the number of Canadian travellers to the US. Air travel from Canada to the US dropped nearly 24%, while car travel fell more than 30% when compared to the same period last year, according to data released this week by Canada's statistics office.

Overall, the US has seen a 3.2% drop in international spending in the country, driven primarily by fewer visitors from Canada, according to the US Travel Association, a nonprofit group representing the American travel industry.

Still, with Canadians choosing to travel closer to home, the country's own tourism industry has gotten a boost. Canada's tourism sector made a record-breaking C$59bn from May to August of 2025, up 6% from the same period last year, mostly because of people choosing to travel domestically, according to Destination Canada, a national tourism organisation.

Some of those choosing to stay home are Canadian snowbirds, retirees who travel south to states like Florida to find warmth in the winter months. A survey from the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada found these baby boomers were staying home more than other age groups, with only 10% planning US trips for this year, down 66% compared to last year.

Ms Gammon said some of her friends have even chosen to sell their winter homes in Florida because of the frosty relations and frustrations with the Trump administration.

As for Canada - when the Canadian dollar is worth only 73 cents American - how could they afford to come to begin with.
I'm Canadian....sorry but you do need to do some homework.....The Canadian dollar has hovered around 73 cents USD in multiple different years, including 2004, 2015–2016, 2019–2020, and again in 2023–2025. In all other years that never stopped us from visiting in great numbers.

I would imagine what's happening all over the US in the video below is another factor in a decline in tourism. I used to love visiting Seattle, but not anymore because it's become like this.

Yeah I'm sure that's the reason why. That certainly looks like a tourist destination.

Yeah if you want to put it that way fine. Could be our Canadian politicians purposely have kept our dollar lower to appeal to U.S. investment that's possible too I don't know. Keep in mind the U.S. economy raising the debt ceiling with no end in sight isn't necessarily as strong as it should be either for the world invest in U.S.. bonds propping up your standard of living to give you the space to do that. That's one thing President Trump should consider when saying all nations of the world have taken advantage of the U.S. Could be an element of that but he needs to keep in mind the world is propping up U.S. debt. There's always a two way street in there somewhere.

It's happening in front of a public transportation station. Tourists use public transportation to get around the city they're visiting.
