  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No sense in attacking the democrats that folded, they most likely did so just to be the scapegoat. I can't imagine the party not being behind this.
I don’t know, I am pretty ripped about it. I fired off some letters and made some phone calls, and I have protest postcards heading to their office today.

“Disembowel them?” Not so much, but regretting my vote and angry about their flip-flopping to appease Trump? Yep.

Yes, it is quite likely that had some of the eight not wanted to go along then other Democrats would have filled in to make 60 votes. A lot of political posturing is going on.

I can only imagine their reaction.

The Democrats demanded that the deadline they set to end COVID bonuses be extended, which would hand huge amounts of taxpayer dollars to the insurance companies. Obamacare was a financial disaster, all kinds of lies were told and they passed a bill without reading it. The discussion and debate will come but look to the GOP to resist making those insurance companies wealthier.

In one Truth Social post on Saturday, the president wrote, “I am recommending to Senate Republicans that the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars currently being sent to money sucking Insurance Companies in order to save the bad Healthcare provided by ObamaCare, BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE SO THAT THEY CAN PURCHASE THEIR OWN, MUCH BETTER, HEALTHCARE.”

The following day, he again posted that Republicans should give money directly to people’s health savings accounts, which allow people to save pretax money that can be used for certain medical expenses.

Is this Trump's "concept of a plan"?

The deal was spearheaded by Senators Angus King (I-Maine), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), working alongside several GOP colleagues. According to sources familiar with the talks who spoke to Politico, the agreement has “more than enough” Democratic support to advance through the Senate. Lawmakers are expected to vote Sunday night to advance the House-passed stopgap measure, which will serve as the vehicle for the broader funding package.

It seems reasonable to me to guarantee Democrats get a December vote on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, and which version to vote on. Discussion and a vote are proper Congressional procedure, hopefully there were be no more political stunts that hurt the American people. Eight Democrats did the right thing for the country.
There are always going to be "stunts" ... that's politics and it's all about power.

Of course Obamacare is a losing proposition, it was a pack of lies, from keeping your own doctor to being "affordable." What a joke, pass the bill, read it later, and then find out just how expensive it is. Even with the subsidies the premiums have doubled, and the insurance companies rake in the dough. Having choice, just like school choice, is good for everyone. The individual can choose the plan with the best bang for the buck, cutting out all of the middleman bureaucracy.

Where do these plans without middlemen and bureaucracy come from in your scheme?

I didn't ask you about Obamacare.
I asked if Trump's plan to send money directly to people's HSA accounts is his "concepts of a plan."

I look forward to the Republican plan come January.....

I agree. Most likely Schumer and his close allies in the Democratic Party figured out the shutdown had to end and they persuaded the 'safest' Democratic Party senators to 'break ranks' and vote for it for the good of their party. Most who voted for it have either already announced their retirement or don't face a re-election next year or two years after. So likely only the most rabid partisan Democrats will remember and seek vengeance. Though they are promising just that. I was amazed to read of their spittle flecked nutties over these Democrats who dared to vote to reopen the government.

There is a civil war in the Democratic Party. The Saunders/AOC/Mamdani/OccupyWashington faction would have happily continued the shutdown, and were promoting a general strike, and hoped to cripple Washington DC with their 'occupation' with the goal of bringing the government down. I think they overplayed their hand. Maybe they were only premature, or maybe there are a few in the Democratic Party willing to resist them who finally stood up. The civil war is not over, but in this battle the less woke faction came out ahead. The stakes are huge for next November where the left wing of the left wing party can make advances in preparation for presidential candidate AOC two years later.

We'll see how much punishment these traitors are in for. It's civil war in the Democratic Party.

...another take away: Trump has no qualms about cutting off food aid to the American people.

First he refused to fund SNAP.
When multiple states sued him and won in court, Trump agreed to only partially restore SNAP.
When some states found ways to restore full funding, Trump ordered the states to stop else face consequences.
Trump is still asking the USSC to rule on whether the POTUS can refuse to fund programs that Congress has authorized.

He doesn't care.

The Democrats had previously talked about the suffering a shutdown would cause but went ahead full steam. The administration stated that since Congress had not authorized the funds they could not be required to use the contingency funds. Trump has said full benefits would be paid once enough Democrats voted to stop the shutdown. Activist judges interceded and order that the contingency funds must be used to pay full SNAP benefits, Justice Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a Biden nominee, temporarily blocked the lower court ruling.

“So I had the gun pointed to a guys head and I told everybody if they didn't stab 1,000 people, I’d shoot him. Well, they didn’t want to stab 1,000 people, they got the police involved, the police told me I had no right to shoot the guy… So I shot the guy, then stabbed the 1,000 people anyway. Clearly, I’m the victim of the police, the people who didn’t want to stab random people, and everybody who says I’m bad for what I did.”

Eight Democrats knew how bad the situation that they had created was and made the correct choice to do something about it.

Yes, eight Democrats fell for the con, stabbed 1,000 people based off “I won’t shoot the guy, I promise” and the guy got shot anyway.

Not like I expect you to understand, anyway, because you just talked about how bad Obamacare is and then explained the system you think should replace it, then described Obamacare. Clearly it’s not the program you dislike, but the party that made it happen, and you’re not sure why you dislike it, only that you were told to dislike it and so you do.

Yawn.

Every President, including Trump in his first term, authorized the payment of SNAP contigency benefits during a government shut down. No authorization from Congress was needed (but you knew that didn't you).
