It seems reasonable to me to guarantee Democrats get a December vote on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, and which version to vote on. Discussion and a vote are proper Congressional procedure, hopefully there were be no more political stunts that hurt the American people. Eight Democrats did the right thing for the country.

I think at a certain point, the more pragmatic democrats realized that they weren't holding enough cards to play the level of hardball they were trying to play any longer.

Ultimately, the numbers don't lie... There's only so much leverage you can exert when you don't have control of any of the branches of government.

Had this been after the mid-terms (in which there's forecasting suggesting quite a few house seats will flip from red to blue), then it'd be a different story. But as it currently stands, there was no way to end the shutdown without the Democrats making more concessions than the Republicans. "Hill to die on" politics only works when you control a branch...or at the very least, one of the chambers of the legislature.


I'm guessing the Democrats involved in brokering this deal a realization that it's time to stop the bleeding, and hope voters will forget about this before the mid terms.

The last thing they'd want people to think is "wait...you kept this shutdown going for this long, when you knew you never had the numbers to eventually win this fight?"

Tim Kaine - who's in a state with over 100k federal workers - made a statement (justifying his support for voting in favor of re-opening) to the effect of "people are expecting their elected officials to vote to reopen, and those who don't, could very well be replaced at the ballot box"

Yes, although there was always strong partisanship, people from both sides used to be able to get together. Things have really changed in this last decade, maybe this will be a start toward going back to civility.

No chance. The democratic power will still oppose anything they can, if one house of congress switches to them in the midterms it will be 2 years of gridlock, and should government switch to the democratic party in 2028, it will be just the same, just with the roles reversed. This song and dance has been going on at least since the midterms of Obama's first term, with early signs probably happening for a lot longer.

It's like the prisoners dilemma. Once one side breaches the social contract of working together through adversity, the only winning strategy is to go full resistance whenever you get the chance.

I doubt we will see a change in this in our lifetime. Certainly not as long as GOP is the MAGA party.

Besides that, as far as I can tell, the democratic party got absolutely nothing concrete and just some vague promises that have little to do with what they claimed was their main motivation. I don't really understand why people would vote for them in the midterms after such a dismal performance, but enough people might vote against Trump.

And there are lots of furious Democrats, ready to disembowel these traitorous deal making lawmakers. I first got clue of this deal to re-open the government when I was reading on Substack this morning and came across an article that started with the pictures of these 'traitors'. The comments were vile, full of f-bombs, promises that these folks would be primaried out of the Democratic Party for their compromise. One popular sentiment was that they caved in right when the Democrats were actually winning.

I think Social Security is good for maybe five years before it scrapes the bottom of the barrel. Unless, of course, there is a total economic collapse and what's left in the reserve gets raided (again).

I don't know which country would be a safe haven. Unless you are already rich, that is. For me I have no real option but to hunker down where I am. Glean in the fields and all that, at my age.

It will be interesting to see how the vote turns out. Some GOP members, like MTG, appear to be favoring restoring the subsidies. Probably not enough to get a majority, in which case the Republicans will explicitly own the hike in insurance premiums.

Canada is all but over, with Alberta and other western provinces on the way out, leaving only the eastern provinces and maybe or maybe not Quebec. Mexico makes more sense at this point, as long as the narcoterrorists don't play an even bigger hand.

That all being said, I’m not sure it’s a tactic, but just the reality of the administration we are under. The man is incapable of facilitating unity, acting with prudence, or even being anything other than a bull in a china shop. His baseline is chaos and drama.

No sense in attacking the democrats that folded, they most likely did so just to be the scapegoat. I can't imagine the party not being behind this.

The Democrats demanded that the deadline they set to end COVID bonuses be extended, which would hand huge amounts of taxpayer dollars to the insurance companies. Obamacare was a financial disaster, all kinds of lies were told and they passed a bill without reading it. The discussion and debate will come but look to the GOP to resist making those insurance companies wealthier.
