  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Michelle Obama tried giving these hungry children healthy food. They just threw it in the trash.
It takes time to change habits. And I recall the vitriol and hatred spewed at her by conservatives (on this very forum, no less) for daring to dictate what children should be eating. Funny how that changes once it's conservatives who want to tell people what to eat.

I'm sad he has a drug problem. Hopefully he can get on a program, that helps him get off drugs. Some drugs make you crave sugar, when you can't get it.
Indeed absolutely. This isn't one person though, it's many. It's like a society. And it's mostly younger working age people. They seem to have a whole interactive system in place. Many times there's at least a dozen congregating in and around the store.

Oh, there's a standard for how close a supermarket should've for every citizen in the city? Who created rhis standard? I know a LOT of Middle income people who aren't a mile from a grocery store.
Seems the USDA is ahead of you here - they apparently call them "low access" areas now. Personally, I don't care what you call them - I call them food deserts because that's the terminology I'm familiar with, not out of any desire to influence anyone.

For every citizen? No. But cross referenced with poverty level, yes - that's what we've been discussing. Keep up.
So there's a stand for how far every poor person should live from a supermarket? Who came up with this standard that says a supermarket should be from a poor person?

The USDA says a Supermarket should be no further from poor people than a mile? He exactly is rhe USDA going to enforce this standard? Its a dumb standard. 50% of Americans live at least 2 miles from a grocery store.
Okay? We're talking about people below the poverty line though.
So? Whats so special about them? Again, are they supposed to get a supermarket on every block? How is that supposed to be enforced?
Apparently the time and space to exercise
Umm... no. I like everyone had to make my own time and space. We have a tendency to do that if we find it important.
reliable transportation, a grocery store, and cooking implements. Because you wouldn't be claiming that everyone has those things if you didn't.
Pretty much everyone does. You aren't going to make a claim using the extreme to try and disprove the rule are you?

You know after these conversations im even more convinced that we live in a massively entitled society.

Poor people used to buy their groceries from little Mom and Pop stores in their communities. They paid higher prices but the stores were close by and most gave them credit and let them have charge accounts.
Walmart put most of those types of stores out of business about 30 years ago . There were a lot of items like OTC medicine and health and beauty aids that Walmart sold below cost to attract shoppers. Now they charge what they want.

Once upon a time and still in most countries there would be little fruit and vegetable stands popping up in what we now call "food deserts." When I was a kid ('40s and '50s) we bought our vegetables from a man who came around with a horse and wagon selling vegetables he grew himself. That kind of enterprise used to be called a "free market capitalism." Nowadays the only street business with enough cash flow to justify the risk of arrest is drugs. On the other hand, my son lives in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland which is controlled by the Sureños so street businesses flourish under their protection. The street food is fantastic, you can pick up a dinner for four for about ten bucks.

It's what Walmart and similar stores are doing that's now called "free enterprise" and the street businesses, the mom and pop storekeepers and other small-scale enterpreneurs are "socialists."

Why on earth would we use the word food dessert? Oh I know to make sound like prople are living in the Sahara and its much more dramatic effect to do so.

People live more than a mile from a Supermarket? A whole mile? Maybe its 3 miles? Good grief what do we expect? That there be a Supermarket on every block?

Whats the point. Most human beings dont live within a mile of a Supermarket. I live about 3 1/2 miles from one. I know plenty of people that live further than that.

Yeah, if you live out in the country its expected you wont be close to one. I lived out in the country about 10 miles from one for years. I would just have to make a special trip or stop on my way home after work.

People need to stop.making excuses. There will never be a grocery store within a mile or 3 from every person living there. They would never stay in business. Who on earth in their right mind would think thats a possibility?

Secondly these same people will complain about there not being a grocery store within a mile but will happily jump on a bus and ride halfway across town go to a clothing or electronics store.

Life isnt easy for most of us. Most of us have to fet off our butts and drive or take public transportation to go anywhere worthwhile. Its not all just out our front door down the block. Man we are an entitled society.

Easy bro - I didn't make up the term. I just point to the info that is out there.

Besides - "dessert" is like apple pie. Desert is the Sahara like thing you are talking about.

Regardless of how you feel about it, it is a thing.

Yes. It is funny. But I also remember how much the liberals were supporting her dictating what children should be eating. Funny how that changes once it's conservatives who want to tell people what to eat.

The school lunch has always had a limited menu - you don't get a choice. That's a practical consideration; ingredients need to be purchased in bulk to keep costs down and be prepared in large quantities for serving a large number of students quickly. So, if we're already dictating what kids are eating at school, it might as well be healthier than, say, lunchroom pizza. That's distinct from the idea of policing what people are allowed to buy using the money that we give them to purchase food (beyond the limitation that it be food).

I used to buy my lunch half priced from a guy who got free lunch

Walmart is the reason why many of their employees are on food stamps, Obama care and medical. Maybe people should boycott Walmart. I know some liberals won't go there, because of their labor abuse and they buy clothes from other countries, that have children making the clothes.

Sure they do. Their choice was to throw it in the trash and buy junk from a vending machine.

Somehow it’s Michelle’s fault these terrible parents never taught their kids to not waste food and make better choices for themselves.

No. They are learning by example from their parents who use their tax payer funded benefits to purchase junk and waste food. Honestly, in all seriousness, a selfish sense of entitlement is driving up the SNAP costs. Many people receiving SNAP do not need it; they feel entitled to it. They buy junk because they can, and they wast food because they can. I think if the country stripped away EBT altogether and replaced it with actual physical food rations, miraculously, SNAP recipients would drop by more than half because the entitled leaches would find it too inconvenient.

Don't blame Sam Walton. He was just another ambitious capitalist taking advantage of America's abandonment of a free market economy.

The logistics of that would only increase costs for the program. The current system is the most cost effective way to provide food assistance to those in need. Go after those taking advantage instead of punishing the rest who are in need.

As it always was.

My point is that the two scenarios aren't really comparable in practice. If the "school lunch program" gave students a set amount of money to spend in the school cafeteria rather than access to a specific meal, and Michelle Obama wanted to limit what items at the cafeteria they could spend those dollars on, then you could make an argument for hypocrisy. But that's not the case.

I have a bigger problem, that they used to have all this America logos in their store. But they didn't buy a lot of their stuff in America. It's deceitful.

86% of all SNAP benefits go to households with gross monthly income at or below the poverty level.
