  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

“Our Government lawyers do not think we have the legal authority to pay SNAP with certain monies we have available, and now two Courts have issued conflicting opinions on what we can and cannot do. I do NOT want Americans to go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT,” President Trump said on Truth Social.

People should not suffer because of a political stunt.

SNAP benefits can, and always have, continued during a government shutdown. It should have never been an issue. It's a shame that the Trump administration had to be sued in order to keep people in this country from going without food.

He's demolishing the White House and blasting Venezuelan fishermen out of their boats and he can't figure out how to give out Snap from a contingency fund.
Oh, I get it. He is unable to do good.

It's hardly a shame to clarify legal issues. Trump asked his attorneys to talk with the courts to find out how to legally get SNAP funds out to those in need as quickly as possible. A friend pitched in to pay the military. The Democrat actions can potentially hurt a lot of Americans.

There will be a memorial service for Satire on Monday afternoon at the remnants of the East Wing. Mr. S. Colbert will say a few words and Mr. E. Idle will play a rendition of Alway Look On The Bright Side Of Life. Please leave all sidearms at the main gate where The Proud Boys will be acting as security. For further details see The Onion. Please send all flowers to the Epstein Memorial Wing of the George Washington University Hospital.

When he wants to wield unstoppable power he doesn't let laws get in his way.

But when people are hungry and malnourished he uses the law as an excuse. And that's the real, un"alternative" facts.

None of this would have happened had not the Democrats pulled the shutdown stunt. Trump has made his position clear, as per CNN:

And President Donald Trump on Friday evening said that he’s instructed the administration’s lawyers to ask the courts how it can legally fund the benefits as quickly as possible.
“Even if we get immediate guidance, it will unfortunately be delayed while States get the money out,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding, just like I did with Military and Law Enforcement Pay.”

Why do you guys even still have a congress when you can just tap trump's friends for funding of everything?

Wow. That is some serious reality denial there.
3 simple claims that his supporters ALSO support, and you claim its not real without even bothering to support your statement???

1. He demolished a wing of the white house
3. He is bombing Venezuelan boats.
3. He can't figure out how to finance snap

If you want to have discussions with grownups you can't live in a reality where Trump gets to do things you SUPPORT but when others describe it you claim it isn't happen.

That's not how healthy adults function in the real world.

He should do neither. It is really simple if the law will not allow it he should not do it. What happens when something happens like those funds were meant for ( not a government shutdown by the way and we do not have them? What happens if this goes another round? I am wondering what the democrats will do if the healthcare credits expire? Open the government back up?

Does not matter as A they would not get the benefits today anyway. B the judges do not have the power to order that and C if there is no money to use legally they can not just pull it out of their butts. Even if they COULD legally use the money there is not enough to cover full benefits even if they used every red cent of it which means if something else comes up either in the form of a natural disaster which is what the funds are MEANT for or in the form of December coming around and the government still being shut down they will sure enough not have the money.

The judge's order is not that confusing. This is just a delaying tactic, if not outright ignoring a court order.
The court does not have the authority to order that that is the issue which is why they should appeal the ruling. Even if they do not the funds will not be there today.

The Trump administration was deliberately withholding funds to keep SNAP going. That's why the Trump administration had to be sued. The administration's attorneys were literally fighting to prevent a contingency reserve of $6 billion that was established by Congress from being used to feed Americans.

For more context, USDA originally stated that these contingency funds would be used to keep these programs going.

Then the Administration changed its mind.

Deleted USDA plan once expected to keep food assistance funded during government shutdown

An archived page of the USDA’s website has showed the plan would allow contingency funds to keep "core nutrition safety net programs" funded during a lapse.

In a new memo released three days ago, the USDA said, "contingency funds are not legally available to cover regular benefits."

Does not matter as A they would not get the benefits today anyway.
There was a plan in place before the shutdown that would have allowed SNAP benefits to continue.

Lapse of Funding Plan

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): OMB’s General Counsel provided a letter to USDA on May 23, 2025 stating that there is a bona fide need to obligate benefits for October – the first month of the fiscal year – during or prior to the month of September, thereby guaranteeing that benefit funds are available for program operations even in the event of a government shutdown at the beginning of a fiscal year. In addition, Congressional intent is evident that SNAP’s operations should continue since the program has been provided with multi-year contingency funds that can be used for State Administrative Expenses to ensure that the State can also continue operations during a Federal Government shutdown. These multi-year contingency funds are also available to fund participant benefits in the event that a lapse occurs in the middle of the fiscal year.

C if there is no money to use legally they can not just pull it out of their butts. Even if they COULD legally use the money there is not enough to cover full benefits even if they used every red cent of it which means if something else comes up either in the form of a natural disaster which is what the funds are MEANT for or in the form of December coming around and the government still being shut down they will sure enough not have the money.
The natural disaster excuse is what the Trump administration was using as a defense to block funds from being used to continue SNAP benefits. There was no basis for this claim, and the administration's actions were found to be illegal.

Below is a document that was issued during Trump's first administration that proves they knew all along that the SNAP contingency fund could be used towards keeping benefits from lapsing during a shutdown.

Should States continue normal SNAP operations after completing the early issuance process?

States must continue accepting applications and determining eligibility for SNAP. Limited funding within the SNAP contingency reserve is available for these cases; it is for this reason that it is so critical that States issue their regular ongoing benefits by January 20th.

FNS is committed to minimizing the impact of the appropriations lapse on SNAP households and directing the limited funding available from the contingency that can be used toward normal SNAP operations, including the issuance of benefits for new applicants in February, should the Federal government shutdown continue.

How should States handle new applications that are determined eligible for February benefits if they will not receive a combined allotment in January?

Limited funding within the SNAP contingency reserve is available for these cases; it is for this reason that it is so critical that States issue their regular ongoing benefits by January 20th. States should handle new applications for February benefits according to normal procedures.

He's never cared about the legality of shuffling funds around when it was something he WANTED to do. Besides, according to him,
he has brought in TRILLIONS in funding from tariffs alone that is just waiting there to be used for the benefit of the American people. I'm sure if we tell him the money is to build a wall on the Mexican border that he'd figure it out.

The idea that people are so shortsighted given the idea of private entities paying the US military is just mind boggling.
