  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who Is Paying for Trump’s $250 Million Ballroom—and What They Might Get in Return

President Donald Trump has made it clear that he wants the legacy he leaves in the White House to be one of renovation. He began making changes to the historic building immediately upon entering office, with the Oval Office now practically dripping in gold-rimmed portraits and the Rose Garden now paved with stone and adorned with umbrellas.

His latest—and most audacious—change, though, has just begun—one that has torn down a wing of the White House and will potentially almost double the footprint of the existing structure, with the help of major U.S. businesses and some of the wealthiest individuals in the nation.

“It’s going to be much more stable, strong, secure, and beautiful than ever,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a press briefing Thursday of the “Big, Beautiful Ballroom,” which she said would be given an official name that would be announced by the President himself.

Remember way back in 2011 at the Press Dinner when Obama roasted Trump by putting this up on the screen?
1761555311389.png

Obama said that if Trump got his hands on the White House it might look like this?

Ha ha ha - as if - what an imagination about an alternative universe. No President would knock down rooms of historical importance, the Kennedy Rose Gardens and century old trees? (Oh wait...)

But at least he's following western influences, and building something recognisably American. Some might have feared that a REAL ESTATE developer with a dubious history of being convicted for tax avoidance, sued for harassing women, and allegations of inciting rebellions might have been influenced by some tacky dictatorial bling. I'm so glad that... (oh what on earth? Again with the "oh wait!")

Actually, gold rooms aren’t uncommon and it doesn’t look bad. A ballroom can be more ornate but the architecture softens it. The natural light comes through in several directions which adds airiness during the day and an intimate glow in the evening. The ceilings are gorgeous and the detailing is lovely. The gold adds warmth and off-white is more inviting than a cooler hue. Rooms like this were illuminated by candles long ago and it captures that essence. It’s looks historical.

To be fair I think Trump’s taste epitomises America very well. It certainly shows that America does in fact have a unified identity of both architecture and style that many people maintain it lacks.

The feigned outrage over this is amusing. Probably what really bothers those people is that it will be an indelible monument to Trump. No matter what name (if any) it's given, it will likely always be called the "Trump ballroom".

Thanks for the list.

Having this list is useful. Perhaps in 2029 or 2033, if a Democrat is in office, they could demolish the ballroom to its original state. Restoring historic buildings has become an art, and I believe skilled architects will be able to return the White House to its former condition after 2033.

Since history is so important, perhaps the next Democrat president could restore the White House to the 1811 version.

I don't care if a Democrat restores the White House or returns it to how it was in 1811 or 1940. Both sides are making too much of this issue. The President has always had the authority to renovate the White House, and that right applies to whoever is president—now Trump, tomorrow someone else.

Maybe they could find some century old trees somewhere and transplant them?
Rebuild the Rose Garden - I mean that was just tacky vandalism of a Democrat legacy for the sake of attacking a Democrat legacy!

I guess Google, Meta/Facebook and others are safe from all the wrath and backlash Trump was promising during the election.
I don’t get how some think billionaires and corporations buying favor with the president is better than splitting the cost of the renovations across 150 million taxpayers.

I wonder where those corporations get all that money in the first place?

Anyway, they all seem eager to help pay for the public good; perhaps we can raise the corporate tax rate.

Yes, it's our house and we should pay for it.....but first have some input via our representatives in the Congress. Every president, until now, who has made major improvements have gone through the Congress for funding.

WaPo Op-Ed defending the razing of the East Wing neglects to mention the Post's owner Jeff Bezos supporting the effort financially via amazon.

On at least three occasions in the past two weeks, an official Post editorial has taken on matters in which Bezos has a financial or corporate interest without noting his stake. In each case, the Post's official editorial line landed in sync with its owner's financial interests.

In the most recent instance, the Post defended President Trump's jaw-dropping moves to raze the East Wing of the White House without any of the typically required studies or consultations as he seeks to build a vast ballroom.

The Post and its new opinions editor, Adam O'Neal, did not reply to detailed requests for comment for this story.

The Op-Ed has been stealth-edited to add the fact.
