  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thoughts?
Do you have any thoughts which you could manage to share with us?

At the moment I have only that it was a thing they wanted to do, so why would anybody mind? No one is asking me to recognise the position of the Pope as Roman Catholic Church members believe it to be, and it could do some good for the world.

Christians praying with each other seems like a pretty good thing to me. It is the notion that someone isn't the right kind of Christian to pray with me that is pretty messed up.

Henry the 8th was considered "the Defender Of The Faith" by the pope at the time. He broke from the Roman Catholic Church.

This is a monumental event.
==========
I agree that no one is asking others to accept the Roman Catholic understanding of the role of the pope.
=======
I would note that there has been considerable anti-Catholic sentiment within the Anglican Church these last 500 years.

Alternatively, some Anglicans consider the pope one patriarch among equal patriarchs.
============
In any case, this week should show the members of both branches of the Church that we part of One Church.

Well there were some martyrs and quite a lot of pain caused in the process of our origins as the Anglican Tradition. However, here in the UK there were victims on both sides, and I am glad we have much less fear of each other now.

The images of the King and Queen there do look pretty striking to me, there is some power in that.

Is there a reason why the women are all in black? I am just curious about what that means.

My only thought is that the monarch is not the head of the C of E, but its governor. That might seem like splitting hairs, but Christ is the head of the Church.

The Vatican has a fairly rigid dress code for women. Perhaps they were sent a memo suggesting how they ought to dress for the occasion.

Thank you, but I was just wondering why black in particlar. The King and Queen would certainly have had some advice about what to wear, so as not to be disrepectful.

I have a dim memory that for women, wearing anything but black to meet the pope is a particular privilege. Something for royalty of Catholic countries?
