  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is unfortunate someone died but she could have very well saved the lives of others by her action.
I wonder what the dead perp's name was. I imagine that by the time that comes out this will have become a non-story though.

I found an additional article on this with some more info...

Apparently he pulled something that employees or shoppers believed to be a knife. (The story doesn't say it was or was not).
He then threatened to kill everyone in the store.
The lady fired a warning shot. He turned and advanced on her and she shot him.

Sounds like self defense to me. Although, they are still trying to determine if they will charge the lady.

It goes on to say he was hanging around drinking before hand.
He claimed to be a gang member and had a long criminal history.

It's California, so I'm sure they'll still find something to charge her with due to the warning shot (they'll probably hit her with a negligent discharge charge or something of that nature)

In most states, however, that would be clear cut self defense.

It's Compton. Every poster I've seen at the store features black people. Every customer I've seen interviewed is black. So the shooter was probably black. She very likely won't be charged with anything.

The sociological dynamics/implications you're alluding to would depend on the "level of victimhood" of the person she shot.

That often defines whether or not the demographics/ideologies are the main focus, or the guns are the main focus.

As we've seen in high profile shootings...

When the shooter is considered to have "a position of privilege" over the person/people they shot, it's a problem with whatever that "source of privilege" is... when the roles are reversed, it gets treated exclusively as a "gun problem".
