  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Exclusive: The White House is looking to replace Pete Hegseth as defense secretary

Pete Hegseth has never condoned anything that is illegal under conventions of American warfare. Please stop attempting to spread falsehoods against my Secretary of Defense and Secretary of War. As a soldier who is still serving in the US Army after 27 years of service, I have never been prouder to be an American soldier than I am now.

I did not say he had DONE anything illegal - but this...

"Half the stuff he talked about was illegal under conventions of international warfare America has signed up for!"

That if implemented - he would have the American Military become the MAGA Military.

That is - if you hear from REAL experts about that talk - his "Tough guy" (weasel words) open the gate for all manner of charges to be made against the American military in the future.

FIRST:- He basically politicized the military. If the military is not with MAGA - they can resign.

But I look out at this group, and I see great Americans, leaders who have given decades to our great Republic, at great sacrifice to yourselves and to your families. But if the words I’m speaking today are making your heart sink, then you should do the honorable thing and resign. We would thank you for your service.

A bunch resigned, and Hegseth fired a bunch. America just lost a bunch of top brass across all services, and even (tellingly) the top LEGAL advisors and experts across most military branches. This recklessness is what has made the White House reconsider his position!

SECOND: Changing Rules of Engagement.

“no more politically correct overbearing rules of engagement, just common sense, maximum lethality, and authority for warfighters.”

That has FILLED many ex-generals with dread - who have come out fighting in the media now they are no longer bound to silence while serving. The norms for warfare as described by the Geneva Convention and other agreements under international law are important! They are what define a civilised nation over a barbaric one. They come from Christian tradition - from St Augustine outlining ethical "just war" to the Roman Emperor. What on EARTH was Hegseth thinking? Is the Geneva Convention now "Woke"? What "rules of engagement" did he want to overthrow?
Does he think the regular constraints on peacekeeping missions are too constraining? Does he think peace-keepers should create the peace by mowing everyone down - any group of civilians that get upset that there's not enough food to go around? Are American troops going to end up like Israeli soldiers cutting down teenagers trying to get food off the back of a truck?

GREAT!

MAGA ruthlessness to immigrants has got to be more 'muscular' now with the most devastating and dangerous military in history? MAGA now supersedes moral constraints on warfare as defined by a few thousand years of Christian thought on the matter?
Also, let's not forget Signalgate.

BUT - THIRD - I don't even really care about Hegseth.

Trump was the REAL villain in this presentation!

Over to Ret. Gen. Barry McCaffrey. I timed it to get the long prelude question out the way.
Ret. Gen. Barry McCaffrey discusses. 1 minute 41 seconds.

Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling (Ret.) and Maj. Gen. William Enyart (Ret.) join The Weeknight to respond.
"Hegseth is completely incompetent."

Well - of course. Trump is just plain awful - and I am particularly triggered by his particulars.

But that's a Bulverism. You're trying to psychoanalyse WHY I'm wrong - rather than prove THAT I'm wrong.

We were discussing Hegseth's speech?

How about playing the ball, and not the man.
How about actually answering the points I raised?

I have. As a Army veteran still serving in the military after more than 27 years of service, I strongly support Secretary Pete Hegseth and his speech.

Who said I was, or are you implying that?
It appears that you might have. Because the Venezuela dictator claims those are innocent people in those boats. Whereas, President Trump, Secretary Pete Hegseth, and our military says those boats were illegal drug traffickers.

I too have served - in the Australian military for 4 years in Survey Corps.
So you support Hegseth, even though he:-

1. Politicized the military to be pro-MAGA?
He honestly sounded like he was recruiting the military to support one political party - not serve and protect the constitution of the country.

2. Changing Rules of Engagement?
America should NOT abandon the Geneva Convention and international law. These were hard won concepts from the 20th Century. If you do - there's no difference between you and Russia or ISIS.

3. Berated the entire military service in public?
Leaders encourage in public, discipline in private. It really sounds like Hegseth lost the plot!

I honestly have no words.
America has the leadership they deserve.

J.D. Vance. His job is to basically stay alive in case Trump doesn't, so he's as qualified as he needs to be.

Sure. Rubio. He's gone way, WAY out of his way to become a Trump sycophant. Frankly, it's kind of impressive how much he's sacrificed his former principles. Normally anyone competent wouldn't be able to go along with all of Trump's nutty edicts or would have their own way of doing things that would conflict with Trump and would be out the door or under the bus within a year. For just about all other positions, Trump is going for incompetent yes-men like Hegseth.

You're not at war. Pretending that you are doesn't change that.
