  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Another look at the moon landing.

Thanks Hentenza, but you still don't see the rocket go straight up.
That's because they are going into orbit around the globe. Not that this hasn't been explained to you before. More proof that you aren't really interested in evidence.

Anyone who's watching a launch would expect the rocket to go straight up & not arch over. To say I'm not interested in evidence is not true, I watched the launch didn't I ? Thank you @Hentenza .

Is that it?
"The rocket didn't go into space because I would have expected it to go straight up, and it didn't"?

What kind of argument is that?

The closest they can come to showing a rocket going up and into the sky. Is like this type of video where the rocket goes up and eventually begins to fly parallel to the surface of the earth, where it will eventually come back down. After a flight to get out of the view of the public.

But a video will never be seen from a rocket that shows like this CGI does of leaving the earth and going into outer space. Why for one thing there is no such thing as outer space and rockets can only go up 20+ miles before they come back down.

Nonsense.

That is completely false. If you want to launch into orbit then you need both altitude and horizontal velocity, which is why all rocket launches arch to the East in order to take advantage of the rotational velocity of the earth.

The trajectory always arches because the earth is round and rotating. Just like airplane routes always arch for the same reason. The rocket launch is at t-6 hours right now. I did forget that you don’t live in the US so for you just add 6 hours to your present time to watch the launch.

If you ask me it's completely bonkers, what about the go fast rocket, that went straight up until it hit something which stopped it.

What do you mean, all of them ? There was only one.
I only posted one of the hundreds that came up in my Google search for images of "The earth from space." I don't think I would be very popular if I had posted all of them to the forum. :)

It didn't hit anything, as I know has been explained to you before, but since your memory is obviously failing you, I will explain again.

In order for model rockets to fly straight up, they use spin stabilisation to balance any off centre thrust which would cause it to fly in an arc back to the ground if it wasn't spinning.
Look up "model rocket spin stabilization" to learn more.

Since a rapidly spinning rocket makes for lousy video footage when it reaches its apogee, the rockets release tethered weights which unwind and rapidly absorb the angular rotation, just like a figure skater does. When a figure skater does a spin, they pull their arms in tight, and then stretch them out wide to stop their spin. The rockets work exactly the same way, allowing the rocket's camera to get a clear, stable view from high altitude.
Look up "model rocket yo-yo de-spin" to learn more.

We (you and I) have been here before. I remember saying that rockets need to attain what is called "escape velocity" in order to overcome the force of their weight holding them to earth. That is why they go into temporary otbit around the earth, to accelerate to the necessary speed.

If you ask me it's completely bonkers,
The fact is that everything is completely bonkers to you, because you don't understand it.

But that's a bit like if I said, "Chinese/Japanese/OT Hebrew are completely bonkers - who can understand all those funny shapes?" Or "Welsh is completely bonkers - they have so many consonants and not enough vowels".

But you have also posted pictures of upside down houses, or upside down signs saying "welcome to Australia" - which are obviously nonsense.
It be called the land down under for a reason : )

Okay so we now know why a rocket arches so what I would like to know how the rockets gets through the Van Allen Belts ??

Thought we solved this problem in 1969

Do you ? Don't you think a rocket should go straight up all the way ?

From what I have read the Van Allen belt was discovered in the late 50’s or early 60’s. Its depth has been discovered to be much deeper and revised In recent times. I think back in 50’s it was considered a major problem for any further space exploration by humans . Than suddenly for reasons I do not know it was deemed as no problem for the Apollo missions

I can't say that I ever think about it.
People here have given a perfectly reasonable explanation of what happens. I have no reason to disbelieve them, and it doesn't matter to me anyway.

I know, the Apollo missions just sailed on through unscathed.

They did.

It wasn't impossible

Some people don't believe in the space shuttle and the missions to the Moon because they think the journey itself was impossible because of something called the Van Allen belts.
The Van Allen belts are huge belts of radiation that surround the Earth. It's been claimed that humans would not be able to pass through these belts without being subjected to lethal doses of radiation.
Radiation sickness occurs when you have been exposed to around 200 to 1000 'rads' of radiation within a few hours.
Van-allen-belt.
Image caption,
Two giant swaths of radiation, known as the Van Allen Belts, surrounding Earth were discovered in 1958. In 2012, a third belt was found
The Apollo 11 crew were within the belts for less than two hours during their journey to the Moon, and so would have only been exposed to an estimated 18 rads - well within the safe limit.
Nasa made sure that the spacecraft was well-insulated so actually the average dose of radiation over the 12-day mission was just 0.18 rads - similar to a chest X-ray.
