If this was done to the protestors, I believe this would standard operating procedure. But for US Senators, this is nuts. I am willing to bet that no democrats were on the list. I presume the found nothing despite the effort.

Analyzing phone activity, whether involving private citizens or senators, requires court approval. If such analysis takes place with a valid court order, there are no concerns. However, if an investigation is conducted without judicial authorization by the FBI, regardless of whether the subject is a senator or an ordinary citizen, it warrants a thorough inquiry. Any responsible parties should be held accountable under the law.
