  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

An undocumented immigrant that doesn't qualify for Medicaid because of his undocumented status comes into a hospital emergency room. By federal law, the hospital must treat him.

Republicans recently changed the old law and the federal government no longer has to reimburse the hospitals for providing the are required by federal law.
No, the new law reimburses hospitals at a lower level, but not zero.

The final bill that was signed into law will limit federal matching payments for Emergency Medicaid for individuals who would otherwise be eligible for expansion coverage except for their immigration status to the state’s regular federal Medicaid match rate as opposed to the expansion match rate.
Democrats want the feds to be required to reimburse the hospitals.
Republicans want the feds to be required to reimburse the hospitals. But at a lower level.

So, YES, the Democrats want the federal government to pay for some of the cost of emergency care of undocumented immigrants.
So do Republicans. Either that, or this phony baloney framing is phony baloney.

Taking care of constituents (and future AOC 2036 voters).
Meanwhile, back at the White House...

Trump uses shutdown to troll Democrats with deepfake memes about layoffs

Speaker Mike Johnson defended the president's use of AI-generated videos.

In one post late Thursday, the president posted an AI-generated video depicting Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought as the "Grim Reaper" while the administration threatens mass layoffs of federal workers and cuts to what Trump calls "Democratic Agencies."

In another post, Trump highlighted another AI-generated video of himself trolling House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries with a “TRUMP 2028” hat while they appeared to negotiate in the White House on Monday.

"The effects [of the shutdown] are really serious on real people, real Americans" [said Speaker Johnson] "Is he trolling the Democrats? Yes. Because that is what President Trump does and people are having fun with this."

ty for the corrections.

Much of the debate this entire year has been how much of the cost of the safety net should be borne by the federal government, rather than leaving more of the choices (and costs) to the states. Center stage is Medicaid and Obama care subsidies.

The Obamacare subsidies are reduced starting at the end of the year. Democrats have chosen today to fight the fight to have more federal subsidies. The very OPEN question is how much of these costs should be federal costs and how much should be state and local. Some think that this was an important issue in the election. In any case, elections do have consequences. The Republicans are following through on what they want to do: reduce the size of federal government and have the states bear more of the costs of programs.

There are bills before the Senate, one that restores $1.5T of spending and the other than continues costs as the current levels (those approved in Trump's big bill).

Perhaps, jest PERHAPS, the Democrats might have had a very short bill that was clean with ONE change, the permanent extension of the Obamacare subsidies; or two changes, the other reducing the cuts on federal payments for Medicaid.

The Democrats LOST in the House, the Senate and the White House. They cannot simply role back hundreds of provisions of law. The answer to that goal is to elect more Democrats. SHAME on the Republicans for doing exactly what Obama did in a similar circumstance, show the willing to negotiate AFTER the other side voted for the continuing resolution.
==========
BOTTOM LINE
Voters greatly support Obamacare and Medicaid. They will NOT throw out the Republicans because the Republicans want the states to pay a higher share of the costs.

Does anyone want to talk about how Hakeem Jeffries lied when he said that no illegal immigrants are receiving tax payer funded medical care?
Are they?

This is a matter of semantics.

Illegal immigrants MUST be served by the hospital if they show up at the emergency room.

Let us say that they have no money and would qualify for Medicaid if they were a citizen.

Then the hospital submits this to the feds and is reimbursed by REPUBLICANS at a rate less than when DEMOCRATS were in charge,
=========
So, yes, they are now and continue to be under either the Democratic or Republican legislation.

It is a bit more then semantics. It is taking one possible outcome and re-framing it as a primary motivation.

It is the equivalent of claiming that Republicans want to spend money bombing brown children because they are for increased defense spending. It is not the primary motivation and is a possible incidental outcome.

So is the government still shut down?
I once made one-thousand pounds of dough in 12 hours to replenish my pizza shop’s stores after the walk-in cooler malfunctioned one night after closing. (It was close to 90° and the 52 sheets of dough proofed their way outta their bags and plopped onto the floor!), anyway…my neighborhood was nice, in the daytime, nights were more sketchy, and as I lay there on my bed I remembered not locking the door.

It was unlocked when I got up 4 hours later.

I ain’t checkin’ to see if we (once again) have a non-functioning government.

Burbank airport air traffic control tower unmanned, flights canceled amid government shutdown

  • Air traffic controllers are working without pay during the shutdown, leading to an uptick in workers calling out sick.
  • Outgoing flights have been delayed an average of two hours and 31 minutes, with several flights canceled.
Although the air traffic control tower is unmanned, Southern California TRACON is controlling the air traffic in the airport’s airspace, Alsop said. The San Diego-based organization is operated by the FAA and uses radar technology to ensure the safe flow of planes through airspace surrounding dozens of airports across Southern California. [But the process is a little slow; if I heard rightly on the news, pilots call a 1-800 number to get their clearance for take-off, Clarence.]

The FAA said that air traffic control staffing shortages were causing delays at multiple airports Monday, including Newark Liberty International Airport, Denver International Airport and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.

Map Shows Airports Hit Worst By Delays After Trump Admin Warning

Flight Aware's Misery Map shows there was a considerable number of delays on Monday, with as many as 771 delays at 7 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) alone, plus eight cancellations.

That is just federal workers being federal workers finding whatever excuse they can to get off of work. They will get paid because they were explicitly exempt from the shutdown. The excuse that they are afraid of not getting paid is pure nonsense. They are just taking advantage of previous shutdowns in which they had received pay for their time off due to a government shutdown. I dont blame them, I would have probably done the same. For a federal employee, a government shutdown means free paid vacation.

This is the Trump administration we are talking about. There is already reports of a memo saying they won't be entitled to back pay.

Edit: removed question. I figured it out.

Not for air traffic control, military, NG, and many other essential jobs. They have to work regardless of whether they get paid (though yes, by law, if that still means something, they are entitled to all the back pay once the government is up and running again).

The key is not firings. The key is to label the largest number possible as non-essential and THEN not bring them back, as has been done in the past. During a shutdown, the government always does with less.
There seems to be some confusion that non-essential means not necessary. Office managers, for instance, are necessary but non-essential meaning no lives will be lost, even if the office becomes dysfunctional. The people who take care of the tourist areas in national parks are necessary, but non-essential. The ones that maintain warehouses are necessary, but non-essential.
The government is NEVER forced to hire back everyone.
They aren't forced to hire everyone back because they weren't fired in the first place - they are under contract. They aren't even laid off, just furloughed. Contractors and appointees are a separate matter.

You may be thinking of the air traffic controllers who were fired for striking, not because Congress didn't fund their salaries.

my hedging was not for nothing.

White House memo says furloughed workers might not get back pay

Axios first reported on the memo, which was later confirmed to POLITICO by administration officials in the White House and Office of Management and Budget. They were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the issue.

The memo appears to contravene the 2019 “Government Employee Fair Treatment Act,” signed by President Donald Trump during his first term after a partial shutdown that stretched over 35 days. And it paints a cloudy economic picture for the 750,000 federal workers currently under furlough.

The memo appears to contradict guidance from the Office of Personnel Management issued in September, which advises federal employees that “after the lapse in appropriations has ended, employees who were furloughed as the result of the lapse will receive retroactive pay for those furlough periods.”

BREAKING

Federal workers not entitled to back pay after shutdown, budget office claims

The top lawyer at the White House Office of Management and Budget argued that the law Congress passed and Trump signed guaranteeing back pay to furloughed workers in 2019 does no such thing, according to a new draft memo obtained by The Post.
