Christians are praying for the Jewish community in the U.K. after a deadly attack on a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The suspected killer, 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, got his British citizenship in 2006 and is of Syrian descent.
At least two people are dead after a car and stabbing attack on Heaton Park Synagogue in the Crumpsall suburb of Manchester on Thursday morning. Three more members of the public are in a serious condition.
A third person thought to be the suspect was shot by police and is believed to be dead.
Counter-terrorism police have designated the crime as a “terrorism incident” and have made two arrests. They also know the identity of the deceased attacker, who was described as wearing a vest that looked like it had an explosive device attached.
