In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I hope they stick to it. Putting the brakes on this out of control government that has been weaponized against the American people who don’t subscribe to the warped MAGA version of reality is the right thing to do.
How does keeping the government closed down help the American people? The Republicans are NOT going to make significant changes to the law passed in the Spring. They will simply keep the government closed until enough Democrats decide that it is time for the remaining federal workers to go back to work.

It's definitely in there - the counterproposal linked in the article I cited is the exact same PDF as the one rambot posted. Starts on page 39.
The Democrats need to be focused, focused, focused on ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE and the reductions in the current budget. Voters will understand this. As usual this year can't focus.

There are consequences of losing elections for the presidency, the Senate and the House. The winner gets enough votes to actually pass legislation. Democrats don't understand that they are in the minority and on unpopular side of many issues.

If it is worth a couple of hundred thousand jobs, Democrats should focus on health care until Republicans are willing to talk. The budget MIGHT THEN be passed (through December 2026) with the changes to health care provisions, while keeping all the other parts of the law that are hated by Democrats. The voters can then judge.

Okay, this is getting confusing... Because I saw something else, but whatever, I'll just say its the same thing since that article lists it as the argument in question.

‘‘Department for Health and Human19
Services—Administration for Children and Families—20
Children and Families Services Programs’
Section, why are we ADDING 8 million to send to The Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands?? (pg 30)

Okay, so here's where law makers are having an issue which starts on page 39. They want to modify the ACA (affordable care act, or obamacare) by extending subsidies which is going to cost a lot of money. I don't know what it was before, but it mentions a bunch of different programs with alterations of funding listed. Like they added "No surprises act implementation funding" which isn't listed on the republican section for an additional 67 million. (pg 43)

The problem is these are all revisions... it would be nice to see what the original said to compare.

(3) by inserting after clause (xiv) the following3
new clause:4
‘‘(xv) for the period beginning on Oc-5
tober 1, 2025, and ending on October 31,6
2025, $1,250,000.’’.

Okay, what did it originally say?!?

Here's another, adding almost half a billion dollars its on page 53. Republicans want 664 million, this bill states 1 trillion for Medicare. But Medicare isn't the same thing as Medicaid, but thats a huge jump.

Now Medicaid... the main problem because undocumented people (people who are in the country illegally) DOES have access to medicaid and that's the main problem... So in this bill, the democrats have added stuff that the republicans bill doesn't have. This starts on page 55.

1) They added to continue behavioral health programs.
2) They added to PERMANENTLY extend tax credits (pg 57) <~~~ That's the biggest issue because there's no way of telling how much that would cost in the long run since the government covers part of peoples bills and if illegals have access to this?? PERMANENT tax credits? Oh goodness.....

So while a lot of it is hard to read without knowing what's being changed, at least the medicare and medicaid sections make it more apparent.

The sections of US Code being modified are stated. They're pretty easy to look up.

Yeah, I just don't have that kind of energy, I'll pass. If someone wants to prove the Republicans lied, they can go ahead and do that work. With what little I looked into, at least the medicaid argument was correct.

Even though Trump controls all branches of the government, somehow it's the Dems' fault!

What to know about the government shutdown:

  • The federal government began to shut down overnight after Democrats and Republicans failed to come to an agreement to extend government funding ahead of the Oct. 1, 2025, deadline.
  • As many as 750,000 government workers could be furloughed, according to the Congressional Budget Office, and they will not be paid until Congress appropriates funding and the shutdown ends. Workers deemed to be essential will stay on the job, although they, too, will not be paid until Congress reaches a funding deal.

Monthly jobs numbers will not be released during shutdown

According to the Labor Department's contingency plan, the September jobs numbers will not be released Friday, as scheduled.
"Economic data that are scheduled to be released during the lapse will not be released," the plan says, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics will suspend its operations during the shutdown. It will also not be conducting surveys for next month's report.

The jobs report is closely watched by investors and by the interest rate-setting Federal Reserve, which last month signaled it was monitoring the labor market for signs of weakness as hiring slowed in the last two months. In August, employers added 22,000 jobs, well short of the 80,000 jobs economists had expected.

So the economy is worsening under Trump (as usual), but at least we don't know exactly how much.
It is the Dems fault. Just listen to Shumers thoughts on shutdowns in the past. Healthcare for illegals, really! Give me a break.

White House freezes $18 billion in New York City infrastructure funding

The move, which came hours into the federal government shutdown, affects the home city of Democratic congressional leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries.

White House budget director Russell Vought said Wednesday that the Trump administration was putting on hold billions of dollars of funding for infrastructure projects in New York City, hours after the federal government shut down.

Vought wrote on X that he would be pausing $18 billion in funding for infrastructure projects to “ensure” that the money was not “flowing based on unconstitutional DEI principles.”

“Specifically, the Hudson Tunnel Project and the Second Ave Subway,” he added in a second post.

I think the point is that the Democrats have no right to stick to their policy to the extent of forcing a government shutdown over it. After all, it is the Republicans who are taking the real true American position on health care spending. Democrats just hate America and want to destroy it.
The democrats are no more sticking to their policy than the GOP is to theirs. What is the true GOP position on health care?
"In 2003, President Bush signed the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act (MMA). This brought about the Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) that we know today. MMA made the most significant changes in the Medicare program since its enactment in 1965."
Was Bush wrong to spend those hundreds of billions of dollar and still counting so mnay could have their meds? I am thinking yes, but what the dems want is not horrible. However, since the GOP wanted tax cuts for the rich the budget is already busted. A good compromise would be to trim down the government insurance to just be used for major medical. That would be more budget friendly yet still be a help. The GOP too should have a plan to change health care altogether. Americans do pay more than any other nation for most care. In most cases we pay double what it would cost somewhere else yet the statistics show that overall American's overall health is sometmes worse than the nation s with cheaper health care.

There is no health care susidies for illegals. There is a million or so working legal immigrants on green cards, that qualify for Obamacare subsidies. Some too are legal by refugee status and recieving benefits,. The list is below. Most of these immigrants work and pay taxes. This is because proof of income is required to get on Obamacare. Normally those with less income get state Medicaid in most states. However, green card recipients now have a five year mandatory wait to recieve most, if not all, types of welfare, They could however access the health care exchanges and recieve Obama care subsidies if the household income is enough to qualify for Obamacare.

Here is a hypothetical, suppose you married a foreigner and brough the spouse to the USA. Your income is enough to immigrate (125% above the poverty level) but not enough to pay for U.S. health care insurance. Currently this couple (kids too) can get health insurance subsidies through Obamacare. That expires this year though, not just for the legal immigrant spouse but some of the subsidy that helps the American citzen is also at risk. So these working families will have either no coverage or have to come up with some 800 plus a month (varies by age or state) for the new spouse and in addition the U.S. citizen too will be paying hundreds more each month for their coverage (some estimates are a thousand if older). Without the subsidies the couple will lose their health insurance.
So that is the big part the dems want to protect.

Here is a list of the legal immigrants that currently qualify.

Considering the Democrats have hit rock bottom, they should also consider how much of a worse position this is going to put them in. If the perception of the public in general is that Democrats caused a government shutdown, that's not going to help them any.

The message next year during voting season is likely to be "do you remember when the Democrats shut down the government for x amount of time?". This is basically being called "The Democrat Shutdown" and "The Schumer Shutdown". It seems likely they've made a huge irreparable mistake with this. The loger they hold out, the worse it's going to look for them. And if/when they give up and capitulate, that's also going to make them look bad. It seems like the Democrats committing more political self-sabotage.

There are quite a few working people who might swing back to the Democrats over it.

Yeah, Democrats might cave in. They've done that before.

But, what they need to do, in my oh so very humble opinion, of course, is to keep laser focused on the actual issue here: heath care. If they define this as the core issue, and continue to hammer this in, over and over again, it will be very clear who is doing what, and why.

But that would require the Democrats to be steadfast, and organized. And as we all know, that's not always been their strong suit.

-- A2SG, sure, take credit for the shutdown....SO MORE AMERICANS CAN HAVE HEALTH CARE!!!

The Democrats are wanting to repeal portions of the big beautiful bill they don’t like for their vote for a seven week extension on keeping the government open while negotiations are ongoing. This is absurd and against previous public statements by many democrats in past similar situations. If the democrats want to change law they need to win elections and give up blackmail tactics that hurt real Americans. This is backfiring on democrats and only opens the door for Trump to make more cuts in the federal workforce not a very smart move for Democrat leaders IMO.

Trump is using the extortion tactics. Saying he may close democratic agencies. Those agencies are funded by Congress and for all Americans.
The topic I spoke of in relation to this thread was about the extent of illegals using healthcare dollars. Today, Vance showed bills of illegal's emergency care. Seems Christian to want to help those folks. I think too that the hospitals will treat any emergency and eat the bill if they must. So the care will continue, its just shifting who pays to locals. If the hospitals get stuck, they will just raise the bills on everyone else. You can search various countries, the only ones that require cash up front for emergency care are the banana republics. As an American that visits such places I sure hope they treat me if for some reason because sometimes getting funds days to get the funds over. I see too that some states might give medicaid to some illegals in the usa. Ok, then that is on them. It still seems disingenous for GOP politicians to suggest that illegals getting care are what is creating the shutdown. The ceiling has been raised 78 times, it is not just the current Congreess or either party. It is all politicans that voted for spending without raising the revenue to support it. But in this round, it seems to be centered on gutting some programs and scoring political points. Why can't the GOP use Congress instead of some dubious Presidential power in all these changes?
Those who are GOP should be careful, winning some of these battles because those small victories may complicate who wins the war. Why? because people of all political persuasions like kindness and the fruit of the spirit. Of course some dems have little but if the GOP is the de facto party of most Christians, then the ugliness the GOP can hurt the Christian witness.
