  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained Roberts on Friday, saying that he was subject to a final removal order that a judge issued in May 2024. Roberts is a native of Guyana who entered the United States on a student visa in 1999, according to ICE. He’s being held at an Iowa jail.

ICE said that Roberts fled after a traffic stop in Des Moines, and that he was apprehended with the assistance of the Iowa State Patrol. The agency said that Roberts, 54, had possessed a loaded handgun in his district-issued vehicle, a hunting knife and $3,000 cash when arrested.

According to the official ICE report, he also had a prior weapons charge from a few years back (as it's against the law for someone who's in the US illegally to be in possession of a loaded firearm)

I provided 3 sources, CNN, ICE, and an Iowa local publication (in hopes to make it a "balanced" cross section of narratives on this story)

Looks like ICE has lined up a new job for Ryan Walters.
I had to look up who that was...

Although, if I may say...remember that semantic overload issue I was talking about in the other thread? About how superficially benign or purported "good" sounding slogans/names are chosen to conceal a bunch of other ideological baggage bundled in with it?

This Walters guy leading an org called the "Teacher Freedom Alliance" would be a prime example of that.

Walters, 40, said Wednesday night on Fox News that he is stepping down as state superintendent of public instruction to become the CEO of the Teacher Freedom Alliance, a nonprofit that says it assists educators “in their mission to develop free, moral, and upright American citizens.”

“We're going to destroy the teachers unions,” Walters said on Fox.

Seems like this Walters guy cares about "Teacher Freedom" so long as it's not the freedom to unionize or teach anything that would agitate conservative religious sensibilities.

But I digress...
