  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Left-Wing Terrorism Is on the Rise

I do think there was a time when radical right wingers were more dangerous and committed more violence. But not anymore. Times have changed.
I never said that was not true. Recently you are correct. But over time past it’s the right who are more violent and deadly in their attacks.

I think one reason it's hard to accept the data is because the right doesn't claim the far right.
We don't like them, we don't agree with them, we dont accept them and we don't want to be associated with them.
The left seems to want to accept as much of the far left as they can get away with
I never claimed the right claimed the far right. I know it’s not on this thread but I’ve clearly posted before that I do NOT think all Conservatives are prone to violence.

This is the problem. Its NOT an accurate representation. For example, rhe right seems to have a prediliction for groups. While there are groups on the left, its more likely the right is going to have a group. The left is more likely to have unorganized groups. For example Antifa. Rhe left continually claims they aren't a group because they have no specific structure. So violence done by them isnt counted in the research.
Violence commited by Antifa is included in the research.

Riots in rhe streets are not counted as leftist violence.
Left-wing individuals tied to riots are included in the PIRUS and the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) datasets when participants are convicted of crimes related to the rioting and have ties to leftist ideologies, such as anarchism or anti-fascism. I gave an example earlier in the thread of the January 20, 2017 riot, where 21 left-wing individuals were included in the PIRUS and GTD datasets, and how CSIS includes the riot in their studies as a single left-wing extremist event.

Most rioters are not arrested

That's correct. January 6, 2021, would be an excellent example. Despite thousands participating, only around 1,500 were charged and convicted of a crime. Of those, only 300 were included in the GTD and PIRUS datasets due to convictions and documented ties to right-wing groups.

Of all the available examples you choose that one. Okay

I had mentioned the January 20, 2017 riots in the post you quoted. In that case, only 21 left-wing individuals were included in the PIRUS and GTD datasets despite hundreds being arrested. START uses the exact same inclusion criteria regardless of the ideology involved.

There was a time when left wing violence was worse. A time when right wing was worse. Now its the left.

AVE is a distinct threat and is worse in the US. But because they are decentralized and are organization adverse on purpose their violence doesn't get counted. As we have seen a lot or left wing violence isnt an organized violence. Its easy when white supremacists get going because they typically have clubs and organizations.

Left-wing violence gets counted using the same criteria that right-wing whether it's by an individual acting on their own, or they are part of a group.

No they dont.
Yes they do, and this is why almost every study or report you will ever find on violent extremism in the US uses START's Global Terrorism Database (GTD) and Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States (PIRUS) datasets. This is because of START's unbiased methodology and uniform criteria for inclusion across all ideologies. Below is a report directly from START that proves violent acts commited by Antifa are included:

Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States (PIRUS)

Comparing Violent and Non-Violent Offenders

pirus2.jpg

Of the top 20 groups and movements who mobilized significant numbers of violent offenders in the PIRUS data, eight are classified as belonging to the extremist far-right. This includes offenders who were affiliated with long-standing far-right groups, like the Ku Klux Klan, and those who acted on behalf of movements that emerged in the last several years, such as the Boogaloo Bois.

Only one contemporary far-left movement—Antifa—was among the most active in terms of violent extremist offenders in the data. However, Antifa offenders make up just 5% of all violent offenders in PIRUS from 2018-2021, the period for which the movement appears in the data. This ranks behind violent offenders associated with the QAnon conspiracy theory (9.1%), Proud Boys (7.8%), and Boogaloo Movement (7.5%) who committed crimes during the same period.

I also have the PIRUS dataset downloaded to my computer, so I can see with my own eyes what's included.

Irrelevant,

In order to be eligible for inclusion, each individual must meet at least one of the following five criteria:

Arrested/Charged:
Indicted
Killed in Action
Member of Designated Terrorist Organization (DTO)
Violent Extremist Group Association (VEGA): The individual is or was associated with an extremist organization whose leader(s) or founder(s) has/have been indicted for an ideologically motivated violent offense.

What we know is that an individual has to be arrested. We also know that ANTIFA doesn't have "members". And those committing ANTIFA crimes are rarely Arrested. We've all watched as many ANTIFA commit violent crimes and we are lucky to see one of them actually Arrested. Many, many of them are never arrested and many leftists are let go and charges dismissed.

Its a well known pattern.

This is why these charts are not accurate as to what is real on the street.

Do you believe every right-wing perpetrator of violence meets the above criteria?

What we know is that an individual has to be arrested. We also know that ANTIFA doesn't have "members". And those committing ANTIFA crimes are rarely Arrested. The same could be said about many white supremacists and other right-wing perpetrators of violence. .

This is why these charts are not accurate as to what is real on the street.
The PIRUS database is the most comprehensive and respected resource available in regard to tracking violent extremism in the US, and while its methodology for inclusion in the dataset isn't perfect, incidents by all ideologies are going to be undercounted, not just left-wing ideologies like ANTIFA.
