The underlying issue seems to be what to do with mentally ill people. Parents of the perpetrator considered him violent and tried to get him committed, but it was denied. N Carolina, like many places, have over time decreased capacity of mental hospitals and made commitment difficult.

This seems to be a pendulum. At times commitment has been a lot more common. Then we got horror stories of how people were treated in the hospitals, and unjustified commitments. I think things have swung too far in the other direction, and there will likely be a correction.

I have said very little about all the other crimes and murders here in the United States. There are a few things particularly creepy in this case...

The murderer was14 times convicted.... and 14 times released..
Nobody came to the poor woman's aid.
The mayor and judge seemed like they really didn't care.
The photos so graphically portraying this horrific crime

It is as if I have felt the guilt of innocent blood just by reading into the story... Not a good feeling!

14 murder convictions and he was not in jail?

He served several years. What folks are leaving out is that the bulk of these (maybe all of them; I forget) were over a decade ago... Oh, except for the misdemeanor charge from earlier this year for making a crank call to 911. That one was recent.

I've asked a bunch of times and don't recall anybody actually spelling out for me a theory on when this guy should've been locked up and for how long. Seems like folks are more interested in being angry and pointing fingers than in actually thinking through a solution.
