  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hpw would one determine they are a homophobic bigot? Are they really one if rhey "spends a few hours with an LGBTQ+ group of folks and never once mentions anything about LGBTQ+ but is in fact warm and engaging."?
Tsk tsk tsk

Saying sin is sin isn’t being a “homophobic bigot.”

I have a brother deep in that lifestyle. I’ve seen how much it has harmed him over and over. It disgusts me to no end.

Not agreeing what someone’s actions isn’t “hate.” Period

Especially if their actions are harmful.

Is see the first thing you do is not simple go with the word hate but to examine its antonym.

To put it simply: the message is that there is no hate here. Unless one brings it in with them.

So imagine a homophonic bigot who goes and spends a few hours with an LGBTQ+ group of folks and never once mentions anything about LGBTQ+ but is in fact warm and engaging.

From whence could any hate arrive?
Not agreeing with an ideology is NOT hate. Period.

Not clickbait. You would have done well to watch the video, or at the very least not merely presume what the video was about. Especially since I suspect you would agree with its content if you had watched it.

The video is about, at its core, the offense of the Gospel. That grace has always been offensive to those who want religion to be about moral authority and control--religion as a tool for pride, rather than religion as meeting the vulnerable in their weakness and embracing them with the radical kindness of God. That the Jesus who ate dinner with prostitutes and tax collectors, and spent time with lepers, and who declared forgiveness of sins, and who healed on the Sabbath is the Jesus who was a stumbling block, a rock of offense. Jesus was hated in His own time because of His mercy. Because how dare this Galilean carpenter include lepers who "obviously" were cursed by God because of sin; how dare this Galilean carpenter claim He could forgive sins; how dare this Galilean carpenter eat and drink with sinners or heal people on the Sabbath--He should know His place, who does He think He is, doesn't He know who we are? By what authority does He think He has the right to come out here and say what He's saying, do what He's doing, and then dare call us hypocrites and blind guides? We sit in Moses' seat, we're the righteous, we're the holy ones. I earned my place at God's table. That same attitude that hated Jesus then, hates Jesus now.

Well, it was the result of having multiple pastors tell me essentially the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount parenthetically in their preaching - turn the other cheek - to have someone come up after and to say, where did you get those liberal talking points? And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ, the response would not be, I apologize. The response would be, yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak. And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis.” - Russel Moore in an August 2023 interview on NPR

-CryptoLutheran
Jesus did all that while at the same time proclaiming that all are judged and condemned. Not one time did Jesus ever condone or claim that sin was not sin. What he proclaimed was that rhere was mercy for all mankind who aee lost and condemned to find mercy and forgiveness for all who repent. That no one, not prostitutes or lepers or tax collectors or adulterers are irredeemable. And rhe same message applies today. That no one is irredeemable. All the condemned are welcome into the kingdom. For all are condemned. All are judged and all are found unworthy.

Through repentance we find forgiveness of sins.

Far too often, especially from the leftist gospel, is Jesus condemns none, and there is nothing wrong with anyone who lives a life if sin. But that was not Jesus message.

His message in today's vernacular would be still all have fallen short, all are lost and all are condemned to judgement, but he loved you enough to sacrifice himself for you. That your sin, lgbtq, adulterers, liars, murderers and thieves, separate you from receiving his grace unless you repent and accept him. He will have lunch with you, no matter who you are, because he came to save you if you only believe. He came to forgive you if you only repent.

But we cannot and will not repent if we do not recognize our fallenness, which the tax collectors, prostitutes, adulterers and lepers did and in turn received the forgiveness and grace.

Culture of man has not changed. Mankind still refuses to recognize their fallen nature. Still refuses to recognize their need of a savior. Still neglects so great a salvation, believing there is nothing wrong with them. Still trusting in their own self righteousness.

Absolutely. But its more than that really, its a recognition that the ideology is helping to prevent the person from recognizing their fallen nature. It reinforces that their evil is good and as long as they are good they have no need of a savior.

Are you trying to tell me someone couldn’t put their prejudices on hold for a small amount of time to facilitate a thought experiment?

Going on about it unbidden is though. Think it in your head. No need to insert it into polite conversation.

In the UK we often say to never talk about religion or politics in polite conversation. Keeps things civil.

Maybe only apply you religious rules to people who share your religious views?

Sorry but that's not how it works. From the beginning Christians have preached Godliness to the ungodly, even at the cost of being put to death for it.

The gospel isn't about rules. Its about our need for a savior and Christ is the savior.

Ideology is the rule maker. The gospel frees us from the rule of sin.

Feeling and acting obligated to tell the gays that they are wrong/abominable/unnatural for having gaywise sex.

It’s amazingly easy to just not do that.

By following a set of rules. Saying ‘X’ is a sin is a rule.

The slogan has become something of a "catch-all" for every left-wing ideal/initiative, the implication that being that opposition to any of them = "Hate (that is not welcome in this home)"
One might object to gay rights because of one's religious beliefs. Well...OK. One might think that science is junk because one is not well educated. Well...OK. One may think that democracy has failed and we need a monarchy. Well...OK. And one might be a racist because...well, because you're stupid.

If I'm going to put a sign in my yard saying Don't Hate, then I'm going to make sure I cover a few bases. Saves me putting half a dozen up.

You don't like it? Oh no...

...but the idea that the only two options are "You either support the BLM movement, or you're racist against black people" is a false choice.

there's not really any guessing involved... with the examples of the signs I posted, they're not exactly hiding the ball

They're saying "hate has no places here"...and then listing out all of the organizations and activism movements they feel are synonymous with "opposing hate".

No they are not. They are saying ‘all these folks are welcome here; there is no hate here’.
