You make a good point. Listening, building trust, and asking good questions are often part of evangelism. Paul himself said he became all things to all people so that by all possible means he might save some. Meeting people where they are is wise.
But we can’t forget that the Gospel itself, the message of Christ crucified and risen, is what saves. Faith comes by hearing that message, not simply by reflecting on life’s questions or experiencing kindness (Romans 10:17). Some may seem hardened, but God’s Word can still pierce the heart (Hebrews 4:12). Even if they’ve heard before, hearing it again through a life of love and a mouth of boldness may be the very moment God opens their eyes.
With those who already know the words but remain unmoved, sometimes it helps to use the Law to show that they’ve fallen short of God’s standards. When they realise justice means a death sentence, they also see their desperate need for a Saviour. Then the Gospel becomes good news.
And yes, this can feel daunting, especially in hospitals or with those near death. But pray for the Spirit’s help, then speak. I did this recently with an elderly lady in a rest home. She was very unwell (she needs extra oxygen because her lungs are failing), but the next day she rang me, asking if I could repeat what I’d said. I’m going back today to share more. It was scary, but I spoke anyway and she listened.
So yes, listen, connect, and pray. But also speak the Gospel clearly. Both are needed if we truly love people.
I do think those in power play a role, but the blame ultimately lies with the people who commit these atrocities. The Bible speaks directly about them in Romans 1:18–32. It says that when people refuse to give God glory for His creation, He hands them over to a depraved mind. They exchange natural relations for unnatural ones, and then in verses 29–31 it describes them:
'being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful;'
Sadly, when people reject God, He gives them over to a debased mind, and the result is great evil. God will hold these people accountable one day for these evil acts.
Some people may not like what I have said, but it is the Bible that says it. It's not me. - Although I agree 100% with the Bible.
