  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you experience your faith ? How do you understand it personally

Hello,
Im a muslim and an artist, I want to write and draw a story taking place in some fictional medieval europe.
I could read as much bible as Id want but I dont think I could understand without asking what this faith means on a daily basis ? Like for exemple, what little things makes you think of Jesus or God, when do you look for them in your heart?
Sorry if this is a bit confused Im trying to understand it with my own experiences as a muslim but I dont think I can just rebrand my faith in my characters with christianity as its something different, please enlighten me, write however much you want about your faith Im really curious! And if you have recommandations of what verse exactly to look into I would like it too thank you!

Hi, I am glad you asked.

Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is a substance, it is not something that we can just command and it will come. Instead it is a gift that comes from God.

Romans 10:17 (KJV)
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word (rhema) of God. In the original Greek, the word is "Rhema." Rhema is the spoken word of God. In practical terms this rhema is individual, that God at some point has made a path whereby he speaks to men. If they accept the invitation, then they can be born again, and be set on a path where they have more than just faith for salvation, but faith to be holy, faith for healing, faith for helping others, etc. Faith that gives them the evidence of something even before it occurs. This kind of faith is to basically do God's will on earth.
So at various times, God will individually speak to a believer, and grant them this faith. Where it gets interesting though is that some believers have more than others. I am not sure I can explain it fully but such faith can occur just because God wants it to, or it can occur too because the person seeks God, reads the bible, and puts themselves in a position to be given it.

An example of the latter would be Jesus' disciples could not cast out devils except by prayer and fasting. Why? They were saying the words, they tried to believe, but they could not. They simply had not heard from God. They needed the evidence that in this instance required prayer and fasting. Such prayer and fasting is an extreme example but it can put the physical body in a position to be able to hear and to believe God. Sometimes though it is just simple prayer and reading the bible because the hearing of God that brings faith can really occur at any time. So yes, there are little things Christians say and do when they have faith on a daily basis. Most of what we do is what we have learned and what God has spoken to us in the past. We also listen to the faith stories or teaching of others so that we can be encouraged and learn about more faith. Ultimately though we have to find our own faith. Faith is like brief moments when we grasp something that helps us in our walk with God. Here is that concept in scripture.

Romans 1:17 (KJV)
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

I guess in a since there is general faith in God, that he does certain things to help Christians. Within this faith though God does address specific and individual needs, he also grants faith like David had to face Goliath. How did David know his slingshot would work? Because he had previously killed wild animals in God's strength and surely he would kill the Philistine too.

I do of course have some solid proof where I have had faith and also sometimes too when I did not. But I will share a story from someone who trained at the same school I was at. This school in the EU, had every student learn in class first, then they were to go on a mission trip from some months. One particular student was slotted to go to Africa with a group. She had no money, and it became a concern of the school. She told everyone not too worry, that God would take care of it. On the day of the flight, she packed her bags like everyone else. She still had no money, just faith that God would do something. As the others were getting ready to board, (This was years before security required a ticket to enter the airport) a man come up to here and handed her something equivalent to about 800 dollars. It was enough to buy her ticket. This man was a stranger, she had never met or seen him before. So that day, her faith brought the evidence, she really had heard from God.

I also know of a documented story with a police report; a Filipina woman who was working as an aide to a Portuguese man. They were returning to Angola. The man had his family in one car, and she was leaving the airport in another car. On the way, some men in an SUV forced her driver to stop. When he did they came out and shot the driver, and kidnapped this woman to their SUV. She feared she would be raped or killed. As they had driven a bit she said she prayed and called out to Jesus. Inside her heart (Where God often speaks the most as few ever hear an audible voice) God told her to jump out of the moving vehicle. Before the men could grab her, she got the door open and flung herself out. She says she landed on her feet like walking on air for a moment, completely unhurt. As there was other traffic she was able to stop another car and get help as her kidnappers drove off. As a result of that faith, this woman today leads a church evangelism team where several or more are saved weekly. I can say too that though her life is relatively poor to any Westerner, she has more peace than anyone I ever met.

Of course these are incredible examples but in general they demonstrate the kind of faith that Christians can have. That faith starts with the promise that Jesus took our sins and his blood and resurrection satisfies the requirements of God to allow us into heaven.

Romans 10:8-13 (NASB)
8 But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART"—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
11 For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;
13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."

Beyond that saving faith though is the privilege to share in the suffering and benefits of Christ. That every believing Christian should look to God for their things not just for their own needs, but for the love to share with others. Though even if I doubt God at times, it becomes impossible because I have seen and heard so much personally, that there is no doubt as to Jesus and what he has done, and will do. I do not doubt he takes away sin and in doing so created the path to heaven.

You did not ask but I will go ahead and say that every new convert to Christianity has their own path. Some are dramatic, others quite simple. One Jamiacan man I knew had vivid dreams from God to bring him to Jesus. Most though find some opportunity where their heart is in the right place and the conviction and gentle convincing of the Holy Spirit tells them to accept Jesus in their heart and make Him their Lord.
While some Christians think that God only calls some, most believe that Jesus paid the penalty for all men, and desires to save anyone that comes to him. So I pray that anyone reading this and yourself as well will pray that your heart is open and can inherit not just the saving faith for Jesus, but also the kind of faith that really can move mountains based on Mark 11. God bless you. I pray God will speak to you in your own writing and drawing and that you will have a heart toward God and be able to hear from Him.

Mark 11:22-24 (NASB)
22 And Jesus *answered saying to them, "Have faith in God.
23 "Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.
24 "Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.

Even on thus forum perhaps you can see that “Christianity” is and means whatever people want it to mean. Our experience and understanding has been infected by political bias, thanks to our addiction to social media, influencers and poor leadership.

Most of us have renounced authentic spiritual seeking. And the most important thing, our relationship to Christ, is also now tainted with political idiology.

I would say you are free to portray Christians as you perceive them.

Richard's post is excellent, but if I understand your question, you are really asking for some feedback on writing believable characters that are Christian. First of all, I note that you are targeting Christians of medieval Europe, and as you are a self-proclaimed Muslim, my guess is that your story will take place during a time period where both religions are well established. So we're targeting 1000AD, give or take a few hundred years.

Your average Christian (and I think probably Muslim) are very different to anything you would see today. They have the same core beliefs, but in this time period, many people are illiterate if they are not nobility, wealthy landowners, clergy, monks, or high-ranking government officials. On the other hand, they are much more devout, so they take the word of the priests who unwaveringly (for the most part) believe in God.

Knights and other military might believe they are doing the will of God, although modern Christians are usually pacifist in nature. If your time period is after 1000-1100AD (the crusades), then Muslims and Christians will be much more antagonistic towards each other than before that. Before this, (800-1000AD) Christians are more likely to be dealing with wars with pagan vikings in the north, which were mostly resolved by pagan conversions before the crusades. Holy wars are more common.

Medieval christians are much more superstitious, insomuch that things we think are random events today would be acts of God or the Devil back then. A mental illness could be diagnosed as demon-possession, as could many other physical ailments. In some areas they may be quick to conclude that witchcraft could explain certain events, which was condemned. Christians of this age often felt the responsibility to condemn sinners in serious "demon-influenced" crimes like this, whereas today most Christians believe that God is the only one who can judge a person. It is much easier in general to whip up a frenzy amongst poorly educated people.

Christians in all time periods pray and give thanks before meals. It is a convenient time to have all the family to be together in such a way. Most Christians were either Catholic in the west or Orthodox in the east, which is almost the same thing with a few key differences. Most families are much more strict, and corporal punishment was common, but on the other hand, people showed more respect for authority back then.

If your time period is after the Bubonic plague (Black Death from 1346-1352AD), then there is a big shift in attitude. Many thought that Armageddon was coming. (Interpretations relating the time of Revelation to the period abounded) Many questioned God in a way that they never did before. Serfdom eventually changed into the renaissance, so people slowly became more educated. I think this also affected Muslim countries as well but probably in different ways.

As @SuperCow has noted, you are not (I think) asking about the spirituality of 21st-century American Christians, but rather about the spirituality of medieval European Christians. One approach that helps me learn about other faiths is to read the prayers that other people use. With that in mind, here are a couple of sources that might be helpful.

Sunday worship would have been liturgical, most often in Latin. Forms varied a bit from one region to another, but here is one typical rite: Internet History Sourcebooks: Medieval Sourcebook . This particular version is from 1962, but it gives a pretty good sense of what would have been used in earlier centuries.

A collection of everyday prayers that I like very much is Carmina Gadelica. These are prayers and incantations collected from ordinary people in Scotland in the 1800s. While the prayers were collected much later than the medieval period, I assume the prayers have roots in a much older culture. The collection is specific to Scotland, and you may well be writing about a different area in Europe, but I think the prayers reflect well the European pre-Enlightenment approach to life, in which God and the saints are all around us and in everything all the time. Here's one online source for the book: Carmina gadelica : hymns and incantations with illustrative notes on words, rites, and customs, dying and obsolete : Carmichael, Alexander, 1832-1912. comp. and tr. cn : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

Thanks for checking in with Christians to try to reflect our religion authentically. I wish you lots of success in creating your story!

Going back to Noah, God tried to help us live life our fallen state ( Genesis 9:1-17). Although the Jews had the law of Moses ( 10 commandments, Exodus 20:1-17) everyone is accountable to basic laws of conduct ( Romans 13:8-10 etc.) that overlap with the 10 commandments. King Solomon tells us this in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 also.

While we have to live by God’s commandments, we will fail to keep them. God is merciful & will always judge our works ( Romans 2:6-16). Everyone is in danger of condemnation ( Romans 3:19-20). We have to realize that God does not automatically condemn us or give us a free pass ( the Lord tells us this, John 15:22-24) & He directed His most serious righteous judgment to those who saw but denied His witness not the uninformed.

So how can we trust in ourselves to obey God’s law? This is just by treating our neighbors as we should want to be treated ( Matthew 7:12 per Matthew 7:1-12). This “golden rule” is what the Lord tells us is the law & prophets & these are dependent on God’s great commandments ( Matthew 22:31-40). Without these the world would implode and sometimes comes close. We still need a Savior when all is said & done.

While prophecy still exists, there are no more prophets to tell us anything new. John the Baptist was the last & he prepared the way of the Lord Jesus Christ ( Isaiah 40:3-5, Matthew 11:9-13 etc.). Only God can save us, the God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob by giving us His only begotten Son ( John 3:16-21) Who is also God ( John 1:1-18). Paul tells us how to receive our Savior ( Romans 10:9-13) & overall in Colossians 1:1-29 especially verse 10-24. We must be saved by grace, then come the works ( Ephesians 2:8-10, John 14:15-18, see also Romans 3:21-31.

I'll explain. I decided for myself, that people loose faith if they consider God to be Wizard, performing wishes. Because not only good things happen.

Yes, he is no wizard. Faith is what is expected, it is not just what you "hope" for. Proof comes right from Hebrews 11. Noah did not hope that the flood would come and kill everyone but he knew it was coming. later in that chapter some are mentioned as suffering or even dying for Christ. Since our faith comes from God, it is only as He wills from His word and from the principles that he has set in motion and continues to uphold. Of course he still does give abundant life, but it includes pains and sorrows on the way.

The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Treat others like brothers and sisters and try to love and treat others right
Treat others how you would want to be treated
You owe the martyrs so pay them back

Make sure that if youve afflicted someone that you let them poopie asap
And merciful men do good to their own soul
And its kinda mean to bung people up kindness should be showed to the afflicted
