Yeah, stuff like that is pretty despicable and should be condemned. But then we get people saying that Kimmel's monologue was somehow "celebrating" Kirk's death too, which waters down the accusation.
This is an issue that faces both sides of the political divide in the US - I see frequent complaints here about how accusations of "racism" are over-used, for example, and this is a similar situation.
I actually think Jimmy Kimmel's remark was stupid, based on speculation rather than facts. And like a broken clock being right twice a day, Jimmy Kimmel isn't funny, either.
Bringing back the Fairness Doctrine isn't quite the same as authoritarianism. Airwaves are still owned by the public and licensed by the FFC, and theoretically broadcast TV is still relevant (even though 8-VSB was a horrible over-air technology to use for HDTV that mostly renders broadcast TV useless now in the US). As much as I detest Trump, or the memorializing of Kirk... this isn't the hill to die on in the name of "freedom of speech". It's just more fodder for media outrage churn, and a distraction from the hard work of real political organizing. In today's climate, outrage has little currency in mobilizing genuine change. And right now, I think the Left should remember the words of Napoleon, "Never interrupt your opponent when he is making a mistake". Sometimes the hardest thing to do, is to do nothing, but sometimes it's the prudent thing to do.
