  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is an enormous theological leap from resting one day a week to engaging in nineteenth-century American Protestant religious activities one day a week.
I didn't quote anyone but what God said. It’s up to one to believe or not believe what He said and choose to live or not live by His every Word Mat 4:4 All you have done is try to give credit to what God said to someone else. I can see why one would want to do this, but it still doesn't change God’s written and spoken word.

Hebrews 4:1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2 For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”
And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” 5 And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

6 Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, 7 God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Where is there the slightest whiff of nineteenth-century American Protestant religious activities here?

You just went on to another argument instead of addressing what God said. That’s fine we can go to Hebrews. Keep in mind, Hebrews was written decades after the Cross, Jesus ratified His covenant at His cross, not decades later.

Yes, we can enter in Christ rest today if we hear His voice and not fall into the deceitfulness of sin Heb 3:7-19, which is breaking God’s laws 1John 3:4 James 2:11 but no where does this passage say that means we can break one of God’s commandments. In fact, it goes on to say those who enter His rest ALSO rest from His word as God did from His Heb 4:10 on the seventh day Heb 4:4 Exo 20:11 Gen 2:1-3 why the Sabbath rest Heb4:9NIV remains for the people of God and the rest in this verse literally translates into keeping the Sabbath.

In God’s rest there is no sin or rebellion to Him, just peace. So no one is breaking God’s commandments in His rest,, that is unrest.

Isa 48:18 Oh, that you had heeded My commandments!
Then your peace would have been like a river,
And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

Rev 14: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

In contrast to
12 Here is the [g]patience of the saints; here[h] are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

You have not answered my question. As I think we agree, this passage is one of the very rare passages in the New Testament which directly addresses the Sabbath.

Where, in the entire passage, is there any exhortation to engage in nineteenth-century American Protestant religious activities on the Sabbath?

Again, not addressing Scripture. I am not worried about what someone said in the 19th century so not sure why you are so focused on that over what the Bible says which is what I have been quoting.

Where in the NT did God abrogate one of His commandments. Verse please.
Keep in mind when God blesses something only He can reverse. Num 23:20 Almost all Scripture on the Sabbath has a thus saith the Lord. So one would need a thus saith the Lord to abrogate His Sabbath commandment.

In the meantime, the Sabbath is still a commandment after Jesus ratified His covenant by His blood Luke 23:56 just a Jesus predicted His faithful would be keeping some 40 years after His cross Mat 24:20 and for eternity Isa 66:23 Jesus in His life kept the Sabbath and all of the commandments Luke 4:16 John 15:10 who is our example to follow 1 John 2:6 Heb 4:15 1 Peter 2:21-22 Jesus taught its lawful to do good on the Sabbath, so it is still Law in the NT and means we can still do evil on the Sabbath as those who did so before us Eze 20:13 we are told not to follow Heb 4:11 and we are told God’s earthy temple what a copy of what is in heaven Heb 8:1-5 where lies the ark of the covenant revealed in heaven Rev 15:5 Rev 11:19 just the way God wrote it, His Testimony Exo 31:18 under His mercy seat Exo 25:21 where mercy and justice will come together soon James 2:11-12 Rev 22:14-15 Rev 11:18-19 Exo 20:6 and as far as I know, there is not anyone greater than He to change God written and spoken Testimony Exo 31:18. But if you feel there is, one is free to follow anyone they choose, just like in the days of Joshua

Jos 24:15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

I will rephrase my question. Please answer it with either yes or no.

Do you believe that Hebrews 4 depicts Sabbath observance in terms of church attendance?

If you would read through the Scriptures on what God said how we are to keep His Sabbath, in plain easy to understand Scripture, you would have seen this question already answered.

As I stated, God’s covenant was ratified at the Cross by the blood of Jesus, not 20+ years later when Hebrews was written. Jesus in His own words said the Sabbath would be kept decades after His cross Mat 24:20 and for eternity Isa 66:22-23 for His saints.

Hebrews only reinforces what God said, not contradicts.

Why the Sabbath rest remains, not changed, for God’s people Heb4:9NIV

The rest in this verse literally translates into keeping the Sabbath

sabbatismos: Sabbath rest
Original Word: σαββατισμός
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: sabbatismos
Pronunciation: sab-bat-is-mos'
Phonetic Spelling: (sab-bat-is-mos')
Definition: Sabbath rest
Meaning:
a keeping of the Sabbath, a Sabbath rest.

God told us how to keep the Sabbath as shown by thus saith the Lords For all eternity - "From Sabbath to Sabbath shall all mankind come before God to Worship"

We all have free will to accept what God said, or not.

Take care.

So, I take your answer to be no, it does not explain the Sabbath in terms of religious activity, simply because you need to eisegetically bring in other proof verses from other portions of scripture.

Thank you for your answer, as indirect as it was.

Let take a look at those who choose to be with the lord and obey him. Let’s go into Isaiah 56: 1 Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. 3 Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. 4For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; 6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; 7 even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

God intended for the weekly Sabbath (this word means rest in Hebrew) to be a refreshing blessing for mankind. God knew that human beings would need periodic rest and change from work. But the purpose for keeping God's Sabbath goes far beyond simply resting on that day.

So, if folks aren't supposed to only rest on the Sabbath, what does the Bible command them to do?

So, if folks aren't supposed to only rest on the Sabbath, what does the Bible command them to do?
Jesus Christ (John 1:1-3, 10-14) 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

He is the one who rested on the Sabbath day and commanded that you do the same. If you really understood the scriptures you would realize that He was the one who became known as Jesus who gave you the Ten Commandments. So not only did He command you to cease from your work on that day He also commanded you to. (Lev.23:3) “Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an holy convocation;” He said on the Sabbath day that you should also have an holy convocation, which means holy gathering or simply put, go to church. Remember in Acts 7: 38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

Let’s take a look and see what Jesus did when he came in the flesh, And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. (Luke 4:14-16)

Jesus made it clear that the seventh day was made for mankind. (Mark 2:27-28) (v.27) And he said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath: Do we understand that, the Sabbath was made for us, not us for the Sabbath. (v.28) Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath. The Son of man (Jesus) is the Lord God of the seventh day Sabbath (Saturday). (Ex.31:16-17) (v.16) Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. (v.17) It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. You see that the Sabbath day is a sign between God and His people forever. Israel was His people then and whoever chooses to obey Him now are His people.

Got it! From that we take the immense leap from resting and relaxing from six days of toil to engaging in nineteenth-century American Protestant religious activities.
