  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Texas A&M University (TAMU) has fired a senior lecturer and two administrators after a Republican lawmaker shared a video of a classroom discussion on gender identity in violation of state law.

The controversy erupted after state Rep. Brian Harrison shared a hidden-camera video online on Sept. 8 showing English lecturer Melissa McCoul dismissing a student who objected to the lesson, which was discussed as part of a children’s literature course.

In one of the undated videos, an unidentified female student is engaged in a discussion with McCoul over content related to gender identity. “This also very much goes against not only myself but a lot of people’s religious beliefs. And so, I am not going to participate in this because it’s not legal and I don’t want to promote something that is against our president’s laws as well as against my religious beliefs,” the student says in the video.

“If you are uncomfortable in this class, you do have the right to leave. What we are doing is not illegal,” McCoul responds.

In this instance, this a college course.

While I've been a very vocal opponent of certain concepts of this topic being discussed in lower academia... college students are adults, and should have a thicker skin.

And based on the text of the exchange, it doesn't sound like the student was kicked out of the class.

First off, "our presidents laws" is an odd way for the student to frame that... Presidents don't "have"/make laws.

Second, college courses shouldn't be beholden to religious beliefs. If a Med school student is a Jehovah's witness and objects to classes covering blood transfusions, the appropriate action would be to tell them they have the option to leave... not change the curriculum for everyone else.

Thirdly, "you have the right to leave" isn't the same as getting kicked out.

Texas A&M committee rules professor's firing over gender identity lesson unjustified

The internal committee ruled that the university didn't follow proper procedures and didn't prove there was good cause to fire Melissa McCoul, who was a senior lecturer in the English department with over a decade of teaching experience.

[The professor's lawyer believes it will have go to litigation, as the school may not listen to its own committee.]

Is gender identity not a genre or movement in literature for children?
It's not, but I had a professor randomly mention politics during theology courses.

Or maybe it's relevant today in this modern world? That can also be true.

Yes and no.

Good! Professors should be allowed to have academic freedom.

What is your basis for saying that gender identity is not a genre of children's literature?

The only thing they should be teaching in college (or any educational class from K thru 12) about gender identity is that males are males and females are females and if you think otherwise, you have a mental disability.

Yes, colleges must promote ignorance!

I would rather have them promote ignorance in this area than to promote fantasy thoughts that a male can transform into a female and vice versa. The way "modern society" deals with this transgender situation is asinine. They have dragged this stupidity out further than it ever should have been.

For decades, gay children have been FORCED to read books about heterosexuals without major fight.

Now we have full grown adults unable to read a book....a fictional book...a made up story because they can't handle the topic?

I'm sorry but I'm not convinced you a fit to be a teacher if that's the case. You don't have to LOVE a topic but you should be able to exist and not run in fear over it.

LOL!
What pathetic argument.

I guess I have a mental disability. Which is weird! I'm fairly familiar with the DSM and I've been involved in mental health for quite a while now.

I've never known my imposter syndrome means that I have mental disability. I'd guess 80-90% of doctors are also cookoo.

Said that, for YOUR world to be comfortable, people who you disagree with have to be burdenned with a "mental disability".
