  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

News has come that the government of Ukraine wants to ban the Orthodox Church over ties to Moscow. This is not only the Russian Orthodox but also the Ukrainian Orthodox because they are not sufficiently anti-Moscow

Yes they’ve been threatening to do that for months now. Also the Latvians are planning on doing the same and are at risk of getting away with it due to less media coverage. There is the European Court of Human Rights but no doubt the countries will argue that they derogated from religious freedom due to wartime conditions, which is of course nonsensical particularly since the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church severed formal relations with the MP and also since both churches have an obligation to bless their fighting forces while praying for peace, and if the roles were reversed Patriarch Kirill would be being celebrated as a hero for his controversial statements.

None of what I have posted should be interpreted as favoring anything but an immediate cessation of hostilities and immediate efforts to reconcile the Russian and Ukrainian people and normalize relations.

Governments tried to ban Jesus Christ during and after His time on Earth. God will prevail.

Ukraine Gov’t Looks to Ban Branch of Orthodox Church over Ties to Russia
"

Lord have mercy
from your link above..

"The action comes a year after the Ukrainian Parliament passed a law banning the Moscow-based Russian Orthodox Church due to its strong support of the Russian invasion of Ukraine."

note - the Moscow-based Russian Orthodox church blessed Putin's invasion of Ukraine at the start of the war.

"The law also authorized banning any organization tied to the Russian church. A government investigation into the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, with its centuries-old ties to Moscow, soon followed."

"The UOC denounced the full-blown Russian invasion from the start in 2022. It declared its independence from the Moscow church the same year and reiterated that stance in 2025.

"Even so, the government says the UOC has refused to take necessary steps, such as revising its governing documents, to complete that separation."

Things that are overlooked, maybe.

The Russian Orthodox Church are not the ones invading Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and the secular government are.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church are still Christian as is the Russian
Is this not a government, aka Zelensky, mandated schism? What business does a secular government have in dictating Church affairs?

To me, that is the bigger picture. I don’t care what the opinions are, a government has no right to suppress a Church

It happens regularly. We see it all over the globe and throughout history.

From what I have understood there has been foreign political meddling in the affairs of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. This, I believe, is related to the secular political movements that challenged long term Russian political dominance. Zelensky didn’t cause any of this and, being Jewish & bearing the brunt of Russian brutality to Ukraine, doesn’t trust anything Russian.

Forgive me, I thought you supported absolute religious freedom?
