  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't have a problem with the Department of Defense returning back to its original name.
It's original name is the National Military Establishment. The current Department of Defense isn't simply the old Department of Warm which now is the Department of the Army.

What is one good reason for the name change?
It was the Department of War for well over 200 years. Why not go back to the precedence of those 200 plus years?

No. The old "Department of War" is now the "Department of the Army".

I'm asking you why it should be changed back. Why do you think they're reverting back to this old, outdated name?

Because we're now talking about that, and not Epstein.

Right or the failures to secure any kind of peace talks with Russia/Ukraine or any progress on the trade war with China or his gator gulag being shutdown or Obama not being prosecuted or... well you get it.

That's inaccurate in two ways. The current Department of Defense was never the Department of War. The War department is now the Department of the Army. In addition, the Department of War existed for around 160 years, not over 200.

The formal renaming of the department would require Congress to act

We’re just going to do it. I’m sure Congress will go along if we need that. I don’t think we even need that,” Trump said last month.
It IS the Department of War.

Actually the Pentagon is a mere building. It's the Department of Defense that they want to rename.

Thinking that the Department of State, so complicit in wars, might also need a name adjustment too.

I think it reflects more accurately what that department does. It has some defensive components but is mostly about projecting offensive capabilities around the world.

What should be changed is the Department of the Interior to the Department of the Exterior, since it's in charge of everything outdoors.
Okay dad.

(The name comes from it being in charge of the interior of the country, in case you were actually wondering).

I don’t disagree but this just feels like yet another pointless distraction and weekly attempt to stay in the news.

Meh. I could say the same about your post. Or most anybody's post.

The Nobel Peace Prize committee‘s popcorn expenditure is probably at record levels, at this point.

As Amanda Castro and Hannah Parry of Newsweek note, in August, Trump said he wanted the change because “Defense is too defensive...we want to be offensive too if we have to be.”

By law, Congress must approve the change, which Politico estimates will cost billions of dollars, although Trump said: “I'm sure Congress will go along if we need that. I don't think we even need that.”

...

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has pushed the change because he sees it as part of his campaign to spread a “warrior ethos” at the Pentagon. Today he said the name change was part of “restoring intentionality to the use of force….

We’re going to go on offense, not just on defense. Maximum lethality, not tepid legality, violent effect, not politically correct. We’re going to raise up warriors, not just defenders. So this War Department, Mr. President, just like America, is back.”

Offensive? As in blowing up civilian boats in International waters?
