  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So, recently I've been reading Rev Hooker's 1888 edition of the first volume of his works
and in its preface/introduction, I came upon this point of "works of supererogation"
regarding his discourse with a Rev Hoo. What are "works of supererogation" and how
does it fit theologically?

Supererogation means more than what is asked for. However, as God says we must love Him with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind and all our strength, I am at a loss to imagine how we could even do that perfectly, let alone do more than that.

The idea of "works of supererogation" means doing more than God requires of us.

In classical Anglican doctrine, this is the position taken with regard to them:

Voluntary Works besides, over and above, God's Commandments, which they call Works of Supererogation, cannot be taught without arrogancy and impiety: for by them men do declare, that they do not only render unto God as much as they are bound to do, but that they do more for his sake, than of bounden duty is required: whereas Christ saith plainly When ye have done all that are commanded to you, say, We are unprofitable servants.
