That's called a nebula - a cloud of ionized particles and dust in space. Likely thrown off due to a supernova.

Mankind is the pinnacle of God's creation, so quite the opposite of insignificant. God created this amazing, expansive cosmos filled with galaxies full of stars so that we can be in awe of our creator, and also humbled, knowing that we are made above all of this.
