  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks for telling me how to focus my attention.
Well you were complaining that theres basically nothing to see here because of "the drama". Sounds like youre unaware there's an important issue on the table.

Personally I'd like to see Americans of all parties press their politicians to end partisan gerrymandering altogether.

Yeah this all-the-same stuff is total nonsense.

Of coure Ds should play by the same going rules as Rs. But they often propose good rules, like that^, for all to follow, and the Rs blow it off.

Right. The Ds don't want gerrymandering, but they'll happily gerrymander if the Rs gerrymander.

California is ready to toss out everything they've done to eliminate gerrymandering and return to gerrymandered districts that will benefit the Ds. But they really don't want to, you see. They have to. At least, that's what Ds want me to believe.

Meanwhile, it's pretty obvious to any objective person that both parties are more than happy to do whatever it takes for them to retain power, no matter what they say. We all know action speak louder than words.

If your opponent won't fight by Marquis of Queensberry rules, you don't have to either.
Um - the Governor thinks the Marquis of Queensbury is an LGBTQ night club.

The Guardian - that made me laugh

This made me laugh out loud -

“BIG PRESS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK WITH POWERFUL DEMS AND GAVIN NEWSOM — YOUR FAVORITE GOVERNOR — THAT WILL BE DEVASTATING FOR ‘MAGA.’ THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!
and this:

“DONALD TRUMP, IF YOU DO NOT STAND DOWN, WE WILL BE FORCED TO LEAD AN EFFORT TO REDRAW THE MAPS IN CA TO OFFSET THE RIGGING OF MAPS IN RED STATES. BUT IF THE OTHER STATES CALL OFF THEIR REDISTRICTING EFFORTS, WE WILL DO THE SAME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!”
  • The Democrats do not like the Republicans redistricting a state - so to show how wrong the Republicans are - they are going to redistrict a state.
  • The Democrats do not like the President name calling - so to show how wrong the Republicans are - they name call.
  • The Democrats do not like a state that their party is under represented in the house- but ignore five States where there is little or no Republican seats. New Mexico - 44% Republican - 0 seats. But that's ok.

Right. The Ds don't want gerrymandering, but they'll happily gerrymander if the Rs gerrymander.
If the Rs gerrymander maximally and do it off-schedule.
California is ready to toss out everything they've done to eliminate gerrymandering and return to gerrymandered districts that will benefit the Ds. But they really don't want to, you see.
Newsom gave Trump fair warning. I voted for the amendment to create the independent commission. I applied to be on the independent commission. If Texas is still proceeding with its plan in November, I will vote to support the California amendment.
They have to. At least, that's what Ds want me to believe.
I'm telling you the same.
Meanwhile, it's pretty obvious to any objective person that both parties are more than happy to do whatever it takes
You were just now faintly praising California for putting up independent guardrails on the districting process. We stepped away from 'whatever it takes' politics. But when cheaters start rigging the game, and if they are not stopped by the courts, We The People of California will have the option to vote to counter these moves.

They're running out by the voters, unlike the GOP. Why doesn't the GOP adhere to the will of the People?

Obviously Trump wants it too, or he would have stopped it. Sounds like it's unanimous.

Only one party attacked the Capitol and tried to create fake electoral votes.

I assume you meant "they're running it by the voters". Which, as I'm sure you know, they have to if they want to return to partisan gerrymandering.

And move back to "whatever it takes" politics.

We're saying the same thing. You and I are both acknowledging what's happening. But it seems Ds want it both ways. They want to be seen as the noble ones who want to abide by the rules, but they're more than willing to toss those rules, that they allegedly hold dear, in the trash when they deem necessary.

I don't have loyalties to either party, and I certainly don't support what they're doing in Texas either. But at least the Rs are up-front about their less-than-honorable intentions while the Ds are trying to pretend like they care one whit about the rules while simultaneously taking actions to disregard them.

We in California took the active and affirmative step to take things out of the hands of the politicians. Sure, you can characterize this hypothetical future change as backsliding, but the other side has not shown any noble inclinations ever.

Yes. But that nobility apparently has limits.

Integrity means something to me. Rs certainly don't have any. Ds like to pretend they do, but only so far as it benefits them.

Partisan gerrymandering has been going on since the beginning of our nation. Whoever is in power at every census wants to change it to their advantage. So nothing new here.
Personally I'd like to see Americans of all parties press their politicians to end partisan gerrymandering altogether.
No argument there.

Except typically Ds propose ending partisan gerrymandering for all. Rs reject it.

But while its the law of the land, of course D's need to take advantage of it just like Rs do. Play by the same rules. But try to change them when needed. Like now.

Another thing to keep in mind for the recent context is that SCOTUS ruled in 2019 that while partisan gerrymandering may be "incompatible with democratic principles", the federal courts cannot review such allegations

Thus leaving the matter entirely in the hands of the state legislatures.

This was reinforced in 2024 in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, where gerrymanderers are given the benefit of the doubt if maps look like racial gerrymandering (still illegal) when they assert they were merely partisan gerrymandering (now legal, or at least, not justiciable).

Texas Republicans call new special session for redistricting, this time with Democrats expected back

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday called a second special session to push through a redrawing of congressional maps to secure up to five more Republican seats in the US House.

The Democrats laid out two conditions for returning: the first special session ending and California introducing its new congressional map to offset GOP gains in Texas by producing up to five new US House seats for Democrats.

The California legislature is set to convene on Monday to begin the legislative process around their proposed map.

And if it was a democratic governor pushing for the redistricting would your statement remain the same?

This seems to be a tacit admission that neither side is even pretending to care about the rules or democracy any more. I guess it's good that the facade has been shattered.
When only one side plays by the rules, there are no rules, only self-imposed handicaps.

Right.

Democrats are opposed to gerrymandering, so I've heard. But not really.

FTR, this kind of rank hypocrisy plays horribly with independents. It confirms what we already knew; both parties will do whatever it takes to stay in power.
I would have thought that was obvious for the GOP at least following the 2021 election, what with fake electors, a call to "find votes" in Georgia, and the culmination of an attempted insurrection on January 6 at the Capitol.

Can't really think of a comparable example on the Democratic side, though. Sure, they complained a bit back in 2016, but they didn't do much more than that, so I'm not entirely sure the "both parties" brush should be so broadly applied.

The illusion that anyone cares about fair and honest elections has been completely shattered.

As Ah-nold put it, it's a race to the bottom.
Well, we know the GOP doesn't want fair and honest elections, that was evident in 2020. As to the Democrats, they do seem to want them, but they are a bit feckless in their approach. Maybe Newsom's actions in California will spur them on to be more proactive. One can only hope.

-- A2SG, gee, ya think Newsom might be considering trying for a new job in a couple years?
