Alcatraz? Come on people. Its an idiotic idea. Like probably the most expensive way ever to create new prison space.

In 2022, there were an estimated 11.4 million prisoners worldwide. There were 1.8 million prisoners in the US (not counting temporary immigrant detentions) - or just under 16% of the global prison population. Against that, the US has 4.2% of the global population.


The US has an incredibly robust justice system (although it has some unfortunate tendencies towards favouritism and justice-by-money, which have worsened in recent years), based on a hugely complex and robust system of laws. Following these properly and taking the appropriate care takes time - doubly so when it comes to criminal cases.
