On "Meet the Press" on May 4, Trump said he would veto the bill if it includes cuts to Medicaid while adding, "but they're not cutting it."
"They're looking at fraud, waste and abuse. And nobody minds that," he said. "If illegal immigrants are in the mix, if people that aren't supposed to be there, people that are non-citizens are in the mix, nobody minds that. Waste, fraud and abuse. But we're not cutting Medicaid, we're not cutting Medicare, and we're not cutting Social Security."

Here are the times Trump has said he wouldn't cut Medicaid
For several months, Trump has promised not to touch the federal health care program for poor, elderly and disabled Americans.abcnews.go.com
It’s no secret democrats are lying about the big beautiful bill, in the same way they always do. Claiming cuts to SS and Medicare, Medicare for our seniors which the same old lie they have used for years.I've got a secret for you:

In this case, it seems to be temporary because he's throwing in the towel. That seems to be the GOP modus operandi - criticize Trump, then peace out.Tommy found a spine, bet it’s temporary and he falls in line.
Yep I've heard it over and over again for ages. They're going to cut off everything and everyone, and give all the money to the billionaires. It's like "if I had a dollar for every time I've heard that story, I'd be a billionaire myself".It’s no secret democrats are lying about the big beautiful bill, in the same way they always do. Let the leopards eat.The Medicaid cuts will impact rural America....
Leopards eating faces has been worn out as well. It's all an attempt to win votes through scare tactics.Let the leopards eat.

"Leopards eating faces" is, and always has been, about schadenfreude.Leopards eating faces has been worn out as well. It's all an attempt to win votes through scare tactics.
It hardly started with Tillis. As for Tillis, he doesn't like the senate version and prefers the house version. Medicaid like a lot of other government welfare programs is probably a mess of wasteful spending. Is Sen Tillis engaging in scare tactics?

Tillis is being used to bolster scare tactics. Is that a "yes" - he's using scare tactics?
Nonetheless I read that Tillis argued that the Senate version of the bill breaks President Trump's campaign promise to protect Medicaid. However he expressed willingness to support the House version of the bill, which he views as a less drastic approach to Medicaid reform.btw, with respect to Medicaid, the Senate version differs little from the House version.

Tracking the Medicaid Provisions in the 2025 Reconciliation Bill | KFF
KFF is tracking the Medicaid provisions in the 2025 federal budget bill, including new Medicaid work and verification requirements and a reduction in the expansion match rate for states that use their own funds to cover undocumented immigrants.www.kff.org
Tillis is being used to bolster scare tactics.
Scare tactics are being used as they always have been. And it's not like Tillis absolutely must be correct in his disagreement with other senators regarding Medicaid reform. The keyword being reform, not elimination. The proposed cuts to Medicaid are real...not scare tactics.
