It doesn't mean the source was wrong. It could be that the WH was looking to get rid of Hegseth (and perhaps hadn't committed to that action) and changed their mind or Trump chickened out again.

Reporters have editors. Anonymous sources are generally known to editors. I would suggest better media literacy.
