  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are we worried that Trump thinks he is omnipotent?
We will never know what Trump believes, but surely he would word salad around to simultaneously holding two irreconcilable positions.

And then his supporters here will have to defend the idea that Trump can eat a burrito that Trump has made uneatable. And do so with the same fervor that they argue Trump can cut $880 billion from HHS without cutting Medicaid.

Rubio has been in touch with El Salvador's Bukele about Abrego Garcia: Multiple Sources

ABC News' Karen Travers asked Secretary of State Rubio about Abrego Garcia at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting in Washington, and he would not say whether there had been any form of contact.

"I'll never tell you that," Rubio said. "And you know who else? I'll never tell a judge, because the conduct of our foreign policy belongs to the president of the United States and the executive branch, not some judge."

What happened to Marco? He used to be antiauthoritarian, or so I heard tell. He is an actual attorney so he knows that he has to tell the judge who has the security clearance to hear state secrets.

But isn't that unpossible?
No! We can retrieve from Mexico, we're not paying to have them held in a maximum security prison there. Besides, he it sounds as though retrieved himself - unless the Trump administration paid for his ticket on the commercial flight.

Which part? The wrongly deporting or Trump obeying court orders?
Undeporting. We've been told that once sent to the foreign gulag, or any other point of deportation, they can't be retrieved.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia back in US to face charges of helping traffic 'thousands' of migrants

Due process galore, finally!

A two-count indictment, which was filed under seal in federal court in Tennessee last month and unsealed Friday, alleges Abrego Garcia, 29, participated in a yearslong conspiracy to haul undocumented migrants from Texas to the interior of the country.

Abrego-Garcia is the only member of the alleged conspiracy charged in the new indictment.

A conspiracy of one, eh?
We’re bringing him back, not because the courts told us that we “had to”, but we still have bidness with this one-man conspiracy, to “face justice”.
My-o-my.

Judge in Abrego Garcia case blasts DOJ's inaction, orders officials to testify under oath

Saying "The Supreme Court has spoken," U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis ordered expedited discovery -- in which officials are put under oath -- in order to "apply the law to the facts."

The judge told Justice Department lawyers that she was ordering expedited discovery "specifically to determine whether you are fighting the court order, my court orders, whether you intend to abide by the court orders."
OK, now that we finally obeyed, can we skip the part where we have to expose how we conspired to ignore your court order?

Judge rules Abrego Garcia's lawyers can seek sanctions against government

The attorneys say the government isn't complying with discovery requests.

The judge overseeing the case of wrongly deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia on Wednesday granted a request from his attorneys to file a motion seeking sanctions against the government for failing to comply with discovery requests.

On Monday, Abrego Garcia's attorneys filed a response to a motion by the government to dismiss the case, calling the argument for dismissal a "jurisdictional gambit."

"The Government asks this Court to accept a shocking proposition: that federal officers may snatch residents of this country and deposit them in foreign prisons in admitted violation of federal law, while no court in the United States has jurisdiction to do anything about it," the attorneys said in the filing.

good thing this investigation hasn't been tainted by trump refusing to bring him back, and this being a possible reason to extredite him.

Not saying wether garcia is guilty or not, but it sounds like an excuse, and a show trial.
The decision to pursue the indictment against Abrego Garcia led to the abrupt departure of Ben Schrader, a high-ranking federal prosecutor in Tennessee, sources briefed on Schrader's decision told ABC News. Schrader's resignation was prompted by concerns that the case was being pursued for political reasons, the sources said.

The criminal investigation that led to the charges was launched in April as federal authorities began scrutinizing the circumstances of a 2022 traffic stop of Abrego Garcia by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, according to the sources. Abrego Garcia was pulled over for speeding in a vehicle with eight passengers and told police they had been working construction in Missouri.

According to body camera footage of the 2022 traffic stop, the Tennessee troopers -- after questioning Abrego Garcia -- discussed among themselves their suspicions that Abrego Garcia might be transporting people for money because nine people were traveling without luggage, but Abrego Garcia was not ticketed or charged.

The officers ultimately allowed Abrego Garcia to drive on with just a warning about an expired driver's license, according to a report about the stop released last month by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
--
And now it appears they're going to make a federal case of it.

But at least the jury pool is tainted.

Slate Opinion

The Criminal Case Against Kilmar Abrego Garcia Is Highly Suspect

The charges against him may be valid. They may be exaggerated. Or they may be fabricated.

Second, and relatedly, the federal government took a very different view of the 2022 incident when it occurred. There was no overt evidence that Abrego Garcia was smuggling immigrants across the country, as prosecutors now claim. At the time, any inference of human trafficking rested entirely on circumstantial evidence and racial profiling. (A known construction worker, Abrego Garcia reported that he and his passengers were on their way to a construction site.) After pulling him over, Tennessee police reported Abrego Garcia and his passengers to federal law enforcement—but federal officers directed local police to let them continue along their way. The federal government did not see fit to even detain or investigate him then. Now it has brought felony charges against him.

Fourth, prosecutors have now brought forth a raft of disturbing allegations about Abrego Garcia’s behavior, accusing him of regularly smuggling guns, transporting migrants for cash, and attempting to solicit child pornography. But it has provided literally no supporting evidence for its claims about child pornography, or even the scantest details about this eye-popping accusation. Meanwhile, its allegations about human smuggling rest entirely on Abrego Garcia’s alleged co-conspirators, who have since been imprisoned or deported.

The government lawyer representing the administration in this case, Erez Reuveni Esq., has been removed and placed on paid administrative leave for not defending the government's interest vigorously enough.
When further questioned about why the government is not able to return Abrego Garcia, Reuveni said he "asked the government the same question," and did not receive an answer.

And now he's gone. At least no one will ask him about Schrödinger's Abrego Garcia, who the government both can and cannot return to the US.
