  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The performance was intended to be part of official celebrations marking the 1,250th anniversary of Westphalia. It featured a woman and a half-naked man wielding scythes followed by a second shirtless man who entered with a bowl full of plucked chickens wrapped in diapers.

The performers made the dead animals “walk” by their hands through the altar area while they sang “Fleisch ist Fleisch” (“Meat is meat”) to the tune of the 1984 pop song “Live is Life” by Austrian band Opus.

The official statement further noted that the cathedral had “frequently been the site of high-level cultural events in the past.”

Regarding the controversial performance, the archdiocese stated: “The specific content and design of this program segment was not known in advance to those responsible either on the organizers’ side or at the venue.” Looking ahead, the archdiocese announced: “We take the reactions to the performance very seriously and have already begun reviewing our internal procedures.”

So, you just let anybody walk into your cathedral without checking out what they plan to do first?

I'm sure they asked all of the necessary questions about whether there would be any Latin spoken or sung by anybody.

Oh, definitely---heaven knows, we can't have any of that!

That's been happening since Vatican II ended.....churches that were designed and built like warehouses, or water treatment facilities, or heaven knows what; if it doesn't look like a place of reverence and holiness, why would you feel like it's a place of reverence and holiness? Instead of a choir loft with a pipe organ and sacred music that has stood the test of centuries, you get a bandstand with drums and guitars, tambourines and kazoos, and The Electric Strawberry singing groovy songs circa 1965 á la Catholic Lite. Instead of inspiring sacred art, you get felt banners designed by 7-year-olds and postmodern statues that look like something from the production department of an alien movie.

What does all of this produce? Loss of the sacred. We all know this; it's not hard to figure out.
