Yes, our citizens were free to buy from Canada and Canadian citizens were free to buy from us. Because there are a lot more Americans then there are Canadians we bought more stuff from Canada than they buy from us. That is more or less inevitable given the disparate size of the two economies. Tariffs will fix it by raising the cost of those items we buy from Canada for the American consumer. To the extent that those products can be produced domestically prices will rise, producing more profits for US business. If products are still imported from Canada, then the price increases will be picked up by the government. Less trade, more profit, higher prices--all part of the plan. And none of that money is going to wind up in my pocket. That's part of the plan, too.Sorta like stating a person with a big bank account needs to give the little guy with a small bank account $$$ that's normal, Big Smiles!
I watched Donald J. Trump telling Canadian PM Carney that the buck $1 stops here before the world, and the Canadian $200 Billion surplus is going to disappear quick, the tariffs are staying in place
