  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump admin. concedes Maryland man from El Salvador was mistakenly deported/sent to mega prison - shrugs 'nothing can be done' [ETA: oh but it can!]

Which means all of this including the Supreme Court order on the Trump administration hang on the whims of one single man, Bukele. He’s effectively dictating US immigration and foreign policy over Trump.
He is dictating his own policiy for his own country. I thought liberals didn't appreciate bully tactics.

Indeed. Bukele is doing his job according to the laws of his country.

Why can’t Trump?

No. The judge ordered the Trump administration to facilitate a return. Meaning, if El Salvador wishes to return Garcia, the U.S. will provide the airplane.

....not even that according to Trump's justice dept:

today in court:
Ensign, the Justice Department lawyer, says that the Trump administration agrees to “facilitate” the release of Abrego Garcia. But his definition of the word is extremely narrow, allowing the White House to effectively take an entirely passive posture in the matter. “If Abrego Garcia presents himself at a port of entry,” Ensign says, “we will facilitate his entry to the United States.”

Judge rejects government’s argument that facilitating return of man only means removing "domestic obstacles"

The administration’s understanding of “facilitate,” Xinis said, “flies in the face of the plain meaning of the word.”

Xinis, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, said she would issue a written order that “expands on my definition of the word facilitate.”
Not a good sign when a judge hits you with the “Do I have to spell it out for you?”

anyone have the fear he's already dead and why they refuse? We've been told he's still alive, but did we get any actual confirmation besides, what bukele or trump has claimed?
He’s either dead or they want him to be. He likely doesn’t have too much good to say about his recent experiences with either government.

So it is then on the responsibility of El Salvador to bring Garcia to the American border. Good to know.

Again, this is just the Trump administration's interpretation of the Court's order. It's an opinion, not a statement of fact. Judge Xinis clearly has a very different opinion on the meaning of the Court's order. I suspect we'll see which one is closer to the truth of the Court's intent soon enough.

Judge in Abrego Garcia case blasts DOJ's inaction, orders officials to testify under oath

Saying "The Supreme Court has spoken," U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis ordered expedited discovery -- in which officials are put under oath -- in order to "apply the law to the facts."

The judge told Justice Department lawyers that she was ordering expedited discovery "specifically to determine whether you are fighting the court order, my court orders, whether you intend to abide by the court orders."

"You made your jurisdictional arguments, you made your venue arguments," Judge Xinis told the DOJ attorneys. "You made your arguments on the merits. You lost. This is now about the scope of the remedy."

What law?
No idea. They seem to do things differently down there.

What I do know is this president in this country is defying an order from the highest court of this country and acting like he and his administration are above the law.

Then Judge Xinis should order the President of El Salvador to return Garcia to the United States. Leat he faces contempt charges. Otherwise, who give a flip about what he decrees from the bench

Trump is not. How would you force the President of El Salvador to give one of HIS citizens to the US?

I don’t know.

How would you force a country to lower their tariffs on US imports? There used to be these things called diplomacy and the State Department. Ambassadors. Embassies. Negotiations. Phone calls. Sanctions. There’s lots of tools in the president’s foreign policy toolbox he can try to use.

What he ultimately needs though is a desire to follow the law. That’s what’s missing from this administration. And people to hold them accountable and to a higher standard than we’re getting now.

I'm of the personal opinion that we should "give a flip" about whether our government is following the law. I find it concerning that you apparently don't, so long as they're hurting the people you want to see hurt.
