  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Consequences of firing government employees - USDA says it accidentally fired officials working on bird flu and is trying to rehire them

The fact that you don't know, Musk doesn't know, Trump doesn't know...but it was done anyway...is the problem. We've got an administration that's committed to taking drastic actions without knowing what will happen.

The fact that no one knows what they do is a bit concerning. If no one knows what they do then why are they there?

Maybe they should have sent an email saying the 5 things they did last week.

I may have said this before, but Trump has already convinced his base that government employees are their enemies (read: Deep State) and are probably DEI hires (read: black women and transwomen) anyway. And Trump's base is prepared to accept "collateral damage" among their own numbers.
Not correct. A large number of the bureaucrats have already stated they are the enemies of Trump and will actively fight him. We are just taking them at their word.

Its been proven that DEI hires actually have occurred.

And government employees are not necessarily for the American people by virtue of being government employees. Many are left leaning with a leftist agenda and are happy to slap regulations on the rest of us to control our lives as much as possible.

They arent all like that of course. But when you have the FBI targeting religious people I'm very concerned.

No one who is making or demanding the cuts knows what they do. The employees know what they do. Their supervisors know what they do. The top non-political staff at the agency know what they do. If the new political staff at the agency or department doesn't know what their new underlings do, IT IS THERE JOB to find out what they do. If they disagree with those positions existing, then by all means, reorganize the agency, request a reduction in staffing from Congress, etc.

Let's hope the tornadoes show up 9 to 5.
Those are probably the only hours the nuclear arsenal is available as well. So how can we stop them if they come out of hours?

But you don't know what they all do. How do you know no one making the cuts knows what they do and if it's essential. If the agency is in the executive branch then they don't need permission from Congress to adjust staffing. Do you have evidence that Congress has mandated the number of staff the agency must have?

Well, Congress does mandate the numbers of commissioned officers the services may have.

Because they're firing people indiscriminately - and then scrambling to hire them back. If they knew what those people were doing and whether or not they were essential, they wouldn't have fired them in the first place.

I have a friend who (still) works for the National Weather Service. So I'm seeing a lot of info about the layoffs, and it's not good.

We've got people on this thread that think weather forcasting is just reading something from a computer.
How do you know no one making the cuts knows what they do and if it's essential.
Because the people making the cuts are well known ignoramuses, starting with Musk and working down to his absolutely ignorant minions. There is no way that they know what they are doing.

All you have to do is read the paper! The forecast is right there!
Who needs a forecast? When America was great we could do it ourselves:

Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s take warning.
Cold night, stars bright
Rain before seven, clear before eleven
When the wind is out of the east, tis neither good for man or beast
A ring around the moon means the rain will come soon

and we had Jesus

“When the evening comes you say, ‘Ah, fine weather—the sky is red.’ In the morning you say, ‘There will be a storm today, the sky is red and threatening.’

You mean the military?
Yes. Congress must actually approve the total numbers of military commissions every year and approve appointments of general officers by name. This is mostly a pro forma action, except in the case of four-star flag officers, which sometimes gets into the political realm and may provoke discussion.

That doesnt apply to people working in most agencies. Like rhe FBI or rhe EPA etc.

Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.
I remember this being bowdlerized by “Sue-Ann Niven” Mary Tyler-Moore Show (and laughing at the apparent ribaldry of “dressed in white…” even though my tender years did not allow me fully appreciate this line until a bit later).

Clearly I'm talking about the military.
Still, the civil services mostly all fall under the purview of Congress, if there’s “too many” employees for the work available, this comes out in that agency’s IG report. (And the executive Branch could ask for Congress for a bill to reduce staffing at such an agency*.) Fortunately that office has shed at least a dozen+5, which would make DOGE that much more effective and efficient, since they’re making (mostly) all the right cuts since we haven’t seen any mayhem, that would be expected to ensue, if these were “vital workers”.**

*You know, the way it’s supposed to be done
**I Hereby Predict April Fool’s Day to be a smashing success this year!
Yup.

Yup.
I get your point.

I'll say on the side, however, that it may be a year or more before we can determine the actual effect of the cuts, and that will take statistics that the Executive Branch probably won't want to share.
