Oh gosh, when it said 'personal belongings' I was thinking of photo of loved one, box of Kleenex, pack of cookies etc. not the sorts of things mentioned above!
No, photos of loved ones, personal coffee mugs, clothing, etc is what they were referring to. The list of prohibited items is stuff they can't take into the building with them when they go to retrieve their personal stuff. The complaint about it is a little overblown in the sense that they're not really being treated like "violent criminals" so much as "outside visitors". That sort of list of prohibited items is generally provided to visitors (and posted outside of the entrance) to help people avoid being held up in security screening. It's still a little insulting though, and really drives home the point that they're no longer considered employees.

don't get involved with politics on this page, but I can't stay silent anymore. DOGE today announced a 10% staff reduction at NOAA which includes the National Weather Service, Storm Prediction Center, National Hurricane Center, River Forecast Centers along with several other agencies. Around 1000 people at NOAA lost their jobs (with potentially more to follow), including ones that issue tornado warnings, produce aviation forecasts, and develop/maintain/improve our weather forecast models...scientists who are tasked "to protect life and property from natural disasters by providing weather forecasts and warnings".

We probably don't need them. How many people does it take to look at computers and post a warning?

Thank you for explaining. I can see that I misunderstood the previous message!
As you say though, it is a little insulting for them to be treated like this.

About a 1000 more than they have today.

What you forget is that the US is large and dangerous weather phenomena are often quite small and localized. A lot of locations could be missed.

A very ignorant response.

They were understaffed to begin with. We need them even more with more intense weather issues lately.

Yeah, im not buying it. People are acting like every federal employee is critical to the safety and functionality of the US. I don't think that's true at all. I think we can do without a lot of them.

Some we need for sure, but rhats not what rhe left is upset about. They are are upset over all if them.

I don't know. What else do they all do? I would like to know. If they let 1000 go, what dis those 1000 do?
5-day weather forecasts are now as accurate as 2-day forecasts were 20 years ago. That saves lives and money. Some of those people worked on the forecasting models. We are not better off without them. See below:

What do mean "we?" You aren't a US citizen.

I'm sure we needed all of them to work on the models. And were critcal enployees. I'd like proof of that. Just cause some Joe Schmoe says so doesn't mean it's true.

Like I said the left never met a career government employee they didn't think was absolutely critical to the survival of a country.

The rest of us know its not true.

Oh, then apparently you know what they all did. What exactly did they all do?
The fact that you don't know, Musk doesn't know, Trump doesn't know...but it was done anyway...is the problem. We've got an administration that's committed to taking drastic actions without knowing what will happen.

There are some who see that as a plus.

Yeah, if they were fired, they'd regret having voted Trump.
I guess leopards gotta eat faces, right?

-- A2SG, suspect a lot of people will share that regret over the next few years, though....

Of course I am. Stop making false claims about me.

I can explain it to you, but I guess I can't understand it for you.

I may have said this before, but Trump has already convinced his base that government employees are their enemies (read: Deep State) and are probably DEI hires (read: black women and transwomen) anyway. And Trump's base is prepared to accept "collateral damage" among their own numbers.

In July 2024, Congress found the National Weather Service was understaffed and the report recommended additional funding to hire more.

NWS Staffing.--The Committee recognizes and appreciates
NWS's commitment and efforts-to-date to fill vacancies,
especially for weather forecast personnel. However, only 50
percent of Weather Forecast Offices [WFO] are ideally staffed,
and the Committee continues to be concerned with the number of
NWS employee vacancies given the critical nature of the NWS
mission to protect the lives and property of our Nation's
citizens. The Committee provides an increase of $14,000,000
within Analyze, Forecast and Support [AFS] to support NWS
staffing and expects NOAA to continue focusing on expeditiously
filling key vacancies, particularly at WFOs.

When Trump took office and instituted a government-wide hiring freeze, it further strained staffs, forcing some to work double shifts to ensure all-day coverage, current and former Weather Service staff told The Washington Post.

Now, following the actual cuts, there may be shifts without staff.

“We are currently assessing the impacts on each of the 122 forecast offices and 13 river forecast centers and our tsunami warning centers to see which ones will be able to remain operating 24-7,” said JoAnn Becker, the union’s president.

Let's hope the tornadoes show up 9 to 5.
