  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just like the European nations who gave loans. Is it ok for them and not for us?
Psst. They aren't loans. Trudeau already correct Trump on this on live TV and Trumps response was "well that's ok then."

Maybe our NATO allies who assisted the United States in Afghanistan after 9/11 should demand repayment for their services.

What perplexes me is the anti-Europe and anti-NATO sentiment we see among conservative today. I want to separate President Trump’s view from traditional conservative voters for a moment.

Conservatives and liberals have different views on US foreign policy. Liberals often express concerns about the number of wars the US engages in globally, while conservatives tend to prioritize national security and view war as a necessary measure.

Although liberal and conservative foreign policies differ, there has been agreement that US national security is tied to the US-Europe/NATO alliance. For the past 80 years, no president has weakened this relationship, and voters from all political affiliations have recognized the importance of the EU-US relationship.

If the US-EU/NATO alliance had been a failure, I could understand the need for a change in direction. However, this alliance has been the cornerstone of global peace for the past 80 years and is fundamental to the United States' dominance on the world stage. Therefore, it is perplexing why this perspective has suddenly become prevalent among conservatives. I do not comprehend it.

The US has nearly 70,000 military personnel in Europe. Critics claim the US is bearing Europe's defense costs. If we brought these troops home and closed European bases, would we save money? No, because the 70,000 active-duty personnel would still require funding.

Reducing defense costs may not align with the goal of maintaining the United States as a global superpower, as opposed to becoming a regional leader. Aspiring to be a world superpower requires sustaining an adequately sized military.

An anticipated minerals deal between the United States and Ukraine was not signed, a White House official confirms.

President Donald Trump on Friday canceled a planned news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after a contentious meeting in the White House. During the meeting, Trump and Vice President JD Vance accused Zelensky of being insufficiently grateful for U.S. support in the war with Russia.

[Rep Don Bacon R-NE] “A bad day for America’s foreign policy,” he said. “Ukraine wants independence, free markets and rule of law. It wants to be part of the West. Russia hates us and our Western values. We should be clear that we stand for freedom.”

Bacon also shared a clip of the meeting on social media, saying some “want to whitewash” the truth that Russia bears responsibility for war in Ukraine.

Russian state media are savoring what they describe as a public “dressing down” for President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. Aleksandr Kareyevsky, a TV host on the Rossiya 24 channel, said on his evening show that the Oval Office meeting “looks more like a public flagellation for Zelensky” and something that “no one expected from the U.S. president.”

The part I saw on the news was upsetting to watch. I felt so sorry for Zelensky. He has so much responsibity on his shoulders and then he had to go through this!

Can you imagine the next 4 years of Trump and Vance getting into one-sided shouting matches with other world leaders on camera?

I found another clip which starts a minute earlier. Based on this clip, it seems the meeting was progressing better then well until the VP started talking.

Vice President tried to impress President Trump by mentioning unnecessary points. Meanwhile, President Zelenski lost his temper, which was unprofessional. In high-stakes diplomacy, one must maintain composure.

The Vice President may become a liability for President Trump. The VP seeks endorsement to carry Trump’s legacy in 2028, but during the Fox News Super Bowl interview, President Trump hinted at a different candidate, likely one of his children. It is not unusual, as the U.S. has had father-son presidents before. This is within President Trump's prerogative. I assume the Vice President will attempt to persuade President Trump and demonstrate that he is the rightful candidate to continue Trump's legacy.

Oh that would be terrible, but it seems particularly bad with Zelensky because of all that he has gone through with the invasion of his country. I don't think that Trump and Vance did themselves any favours today. Do you think.that they will last the four years?

I see Vance and Trump losing their tempers first in this exchange - your clip opens with Trump talking about how much Zelensky "hates" Putin (and how that's making things difficult for him), then Vance (as you said) goes off on a rather insulting tangent. When Zelensky tries to clarify, Trump starts talking over him and - again - insulting him and belittling him. It's only during that exchange that Zelensky begins to raise his voice - mostly trying to finish what he was saying before Trump interrupted.

You're right, people should maintain their composure in diplomacy, but I also don't think that it's reasonable to expect Zelensky to sit there and take the lies and abuse without comment or without standing up for himself and for his country.

That's the clip I was referring to in my post #52 above. I didn't see Zelensky lose his temper but just try to explain what is happening in his country. The way he was spoken to was terrible. Diplomacy is needed but it was Trump and Vance who needed it.

Yes, Vance is ....well I can't say on this forum.
I want to throw up listening to his arrogant comments.

You are correct; President Trump mentioned that Zelensky "hates" Putin and followed by stating that he understands the reason.

I'm not justifying anyone's behavior. President Zelensky needs US support more than the US needs Ukraine, so he should have remained composed.

However, it appears that President Zelensky believes there is no further benefit to be gained from the United States. It is likely that, behind closed doors, EU leaders have assured him of financial support without the need for US involvement.

I hope Ukraine can survive with or without the support of America. I hope Europe will unite and support Ukraine regardless of the stance taken by the Trump administration.

As an American, I am concerned about the strain between the United States and the rest of NATO. In the long term, neither side will benefit from this fractured alliance. My greatest frustration today is that many of my fellow citizens do not recognize the long-term consequences of a broken US-rest of NATO partnership.

President Zelensky needs US support more than the US needs Ukraine, so he should have remained composed.
Couple aspects to this:

1. Why should he remain composed when he's being belittled, insulted, and lied about? The idea that he should "lie back and think of Ukraine," and take the abuse without comment just legitimizes Trump's bullying tactics.

2. I'm not sure that Zelensky needs the US more than the US (or, specifically Trump) needs Ukraine in this situation. As you said, Europe is stepping up its support more and more, and Trump made a lot of big promises about ending the war in Ukraine - which is looking less likely by the minute right now.

3. Zelensky had legitimate concerns about the "deal" Trump was proposing, that Trump continuously dismissed as unimportant. A ceasefire with no security guarantees, when Russia has historically ignored previous ceasefire agreements, has a very good chance of failing. If there are no real consequences for Russia violating the ceasefire, then it's worth about as much as the paper it's written on. It's a very reasonable, and necessary, demand. If Trump refuses to even put it on the table, there's really no point in continuing the negotiations.
