I'm simply saying that how one looks at the 14th Amendment is subject to interpretation. The writers never envision illegals running across the border to claim citizenship. The 14th Amendment needs clarification.Your phrasing is ambiguous, but I assume that by "they" you mean the writers and ratifiers of the Fourteenth Amendment. But you assert this based on what? They certainly drew no such distinctions in the discussions over it in Congress.
The children of both should gain citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment.
EDIT: I originally wrote a lot more, but after posting, noted the people complaining about this being off topic. So I cut down considerably on my post as a result.
