  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Maybe ask them if they would have the same “courage” to make similar statements about other religions like Islam etc. Also, if religion in general is superstition to them, why single out Christianity? If the Bible is “made up”, why do Judaism and Christianity share about 3/4 of the words ( old testament) in it as scripture? Even if the faiths diverge?

Why do some Jews think that Jesus and Paul remained Jews but were pioneers in sharing the Noah laws with Gentiles?

I don’t agree with Jacob Emden who I have linked above of course but I respect him for his general sense of good will.

Why do some Buddhists view Jesus Christ as an enlightened being ( again, I don’t agree with that of course).

I often think the Lord has certain people in mind who might be wrong but have good will & are not blasphemous. There are others though…. ( see Matthew 12:30-37).

It does, thank you!

Very good point! I will keep it in my mind when we get to that! thank you!
It’s too bad you have to deal with such things. I hope those you must contend with repent or at least become open minded.

I doubt there's much you can do, unfortunately. Most professors are given very wide latitude in what they can say in their classes, and liberal arts professors in particular tend to be very hostile to anything conservative. I had one professor who taught in a world history class that Christianity caused the Holocaust. He also let the class out early one day so he could go take part in a BLM "die-in."

There's probably nothing to be done about him teaching conspiracy theories, but if you're asked to write a paper on one of these subjects, that would be the time to push back on what he's been saying.

I am beginning to understand why they say to not go to secular universities... my "introduction into philosophy" class is just a constant degradation of the Christian faith, with inane conspiracies against the legitimacy of the faith being thrown around by the professor, including "It was during Constantine's time that the Bible was Compiled", "No scientists have ever confirmed transubstantiation", "Mary had other children", "The Bible was made by Christ's "buddies" so it cant be true". When I respond asking why he believes that or saying that it is not true, he gets defensive and says that you cannot trust any sources that are favoring Christianity because "all the Church fathers were biased", etc.

The other students get in on it too, accusing me of not "truly believing that the body and blood are Jesus" and making fun that "a loaf of bread was crucified on the cross", and generally making fun (the teacher joining in) of how silly the transubstantiation is. What should I do? I made a small list of the things that he accused and refuting them, but I know he wont read them and the damage done to the student's opinions of the faith is already settled in. I don't know what to do, and its making me upset, not that I cannot answer them, but that my fellow classmates are being told nothing but lies and conspiracies against the faith from a "former altar server" and "existentialist"...

What should I do? What should I say?
I take it that' intro to phil' is a required course, so you can't drop it.
If that is the case, talk to to your counselor about an alternative class.
And let him-her know about the mocking you endure for YOUR philosophy.
Doesn't mocking cut into the sharing of views ?
May God be with you...

You could lodge a complaint against whatever equal opportunity sort of office your university has because insulting a religion, including Christianity, is a violation of one's rights. It is indeed hate speech.

Or just completely destroy your professor in the end of class review.
