  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Catholics will accept a common date for Easter in the East and West, pope says

Is THIS posted in a spirit of fellowship? Or do you feel the right to say whatever you feel like in OBOB.

Post 18. You said "The Orthodox Church sees the Church of Rome as schismatic." Are you coming here to teach your religion? It looks like it. You do know that as a guest here you can't do that? Again, you seem to think you are entitled to say whatever you want in this forum. That;s a bit arrogant. Or ignorant of the rules, and I doubt you can be ignorant after all this time.

It is a fact. I am just stating a historical fact. Like stating 1+1=2. Is that not allowed?

The fact you seem to object to is the fact that the Orthodox are in schism. If you don't like that fact being stated you can go start your own forum. We here in OBOB would be happy for that schism to end. For starters we would be happy if we could have a common date for Easter based on the council of Nicaea. We know the chances of that are slim to none but we hope so. You coming in here, and in something other than a spirit of fellowship by your own admission (see your post 14) is just one more indicator of the chances of ending the schism are slim to none.

At this point do you want to keep arguing, or do you want to go start up your own forum? I thought you might be able to understand the rules about posting in fellowship. I think you either do not understand those rules or do not want to understand those rules. I would be fine with you posting in fellowship. If you can.

I understand that. The Orthodox Church sees the Church of Rome as schismatic.
Yup. It goes both ways. I never meant to be rude or disrespectful.

Forgive me.

I really doubt you were trying to be offensive.

I once posted in the Orthodox forum what I thought was in fellowship about the Church breathing with two lungs, a JPII metaphor. They jumped on me in a split second. They don't seem to mind that this is a one way street, their way.

Yeah, I can see why some people would be upset.

I wasn’t referring to them, just some others I’ve seen on Reddit, which isn’t a very friendly from. Just to be CLEAR
I would take things written on Reddit with a grain of salt.

I’d like Easter to have a common, annual date like Christmas. It would be so much easier to plan for the holiday.

I am not "objecting" to anything. My point was we think you all are in schism and you all think that we are...that is a schism. That is a historical fact. I don't need to start my own forum to state it. I think all of us would be happy if the schism would end. But there ARE certain requirements for it to end...

It would be easier. But we have the agreed upon schedule from the Council of Nicaea that's not easy to change. The first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring equinox. That means almost a month of variability. I don't think that could be changed without an ecumenical council. And unless the Orthodox were at that ecumenical council you would expect one big 'nyet'.

The Jewish calculator for when Passover happens is even more complex, with a nineteen year cycle complete with 'leap months'. We would like Passover and Easter to be synchronized for obvious reasons, but that would add even more complexity.

It's good to have calendars that actually track with the rotation of the earth around the sun and track with the rotation of the moon around the earth. Julius Caesar instituted a calendar that did that far better than the calendars before that, but it had slightly too many leap days. The Gregorian fixed that, dropping a leap day every century not divisible by 400. Darn close now. with the occasional addition of leap seconds this calendar is sustainable. The Julian calendar really isn't. The seasons drift. Eventually the calendar equinoxes and the observed equinoxes drift. The Julian calendar is 13 days off for example.

So I do agree that a calendar date would be nice. But would that mean Easter Sunday Tuesday? How would it always be on a Sunday. Right now we have it fixed in Spring (relevant), following a full moon (relevant), and on a Sunday (relevant). So it's kind of the best it can be.

The reason they persist with the Julian Calendar is that the Gregorian Calendar was sponsored by a pope.
There are documented miracles which happen annually on certain feast days which continued to occur on the Old Calendar feast days and not on the New Calendar feast days. Since the calendar change was not the unanimous decision of an Ecumenical council, it does not appear to us to be blessed by God. If it was, then the miracles would have followed on the New Calendar
This is best exemplified by the 'Old Calendrists'
Who are not Orthodox. They are not in communion with anyone and have broken into multiple schisms
Catholics can even use different calendars, as the Latin Rite uses the Gregorian calendar while some Eastern Rite Catholics use the Julian calendar. It's no biggie. Odd but cool. Except to the Orthodox it's huge. Go figure.
The monasteries in Mount Athos follow the Old Calendar and are in communion with the Orthodox Church of Greece which is on the New Calendar. They are also in communion with the Orthodox Church in Finland which is required by the government to follow the Gregorian Calendar. It's not as huge as you make it out to be.

I didn't know there were Eastern Catholics on the Julian calendar. Do they observe Easter according to the Gregorian or the Julian calendar?

Even the Orthodox are in union with each other. There is the Greek Orthodox who want nothing
to do with the Russian Orthodox, And of course the Ukraine Orthodox hate the Russian Orthodox.
I have never come across what you describe. My family attends a Greek parish and a Russian parish. Our Russian parish recently ordained a new priest who is Greek. We also have Ukrainian friends who belong to the canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine. They regularly attend the Russian Church. They left Ukraine due to persecution from the schismatic, so called "Ukrainian Orthodox".
Rome has one unified Church.
Less than a century ago you had German and Irish Catholics who would have nothing to do with each other.

As far as I know some do keep the Julian calendar.

You don't see Orthodox in The Ancient Way referring to Sedevacantists as Catholics.
