If the promotion of general public welfare renders the state a "nanny state", then what do you find absurd in my extrapolation that you'd find it humorous?

Are seat belt laws the result of a "nanny state"? This is a serious question, because it appears that "nanny state" is a mere pejorative used entirely arbitrarily to avoid having a real argument.

Why is promoting public health the work of a "nanny state", but promoting public safety in other ways not?

What a switch around compared to 3 years ago. A thing we learned about the covid matter is that we lost the forest thru the trees. It became more of an opp for politicians to try & prove their omniscience & benevolence so they could either get their Nobel Prize or name on some building. So they overpromoted the put on masks stuff under the guise of protecting people from germs. They overpromoted a vaccines in order to get this on their resume that they ran the administration which created the cure-all. Sadly I wished it were a cure-all. Lesson-take a bit more time to develop it. Mostly they were testing compliance from the people to see how well they would obey & stay duck-taped in their homes, not venturing outside. Here the powers would then determine whether they & their cronies could go about doing their cocktail parties & poker clubs, knowing that the folks would remain restrained inside & that you would not have to worry about some event. Then we had the arms of govt go along with the scam. The events point out the inherent folly of mankind...that they don't really care about us, it was rather about giving the idea that they cared & conserving money. And so we saw in NY & even my state, that one way to conserve medicaid monies was to send some sick folks back to the nursing home where they could spread the germs thus leading to the timely extinguishment of the vulnerable & preserve the monies for the younger society. After all what good are these folks? I have never seen such evil. And it shows the true character of politicians. Ok maybe not every single one, but many of them. They are so lacking faith & seeing the forest thru the trees. We keep going down this road. And the media keeps playing up these leaders as if they were omnipotent, omniscient, & benevolent. It's rather like 1 out of 100 can truly see the forest & use good judgment in such crisis & not venture down the path of trying to prove how great they are. This only comes from known the stories of the Bible. You have to stay on the straight & narrow. You can't make yourself into a hero by being secretly self-centerd. It does not promote victimhood either. Remember the paralytic. Christ told him to take up his pallet & go home. He did not call him a taxi.
One of the reasons that enduring a pandemic is “bad” is because the public health officials and politicians are going to make mistakes.
Some forbearance is necessary.

I disagree with seat belt laws.
Actually, so do I, and helmet laws as well. Though failure to use them should forfeit your right to medical treatment.

I'm perfectly fine with the government recommending that seatbelts and helmets be used, when applying for drivers licenses or taking a driving test, for example. It would be ridiculous to forbid government employees from even discussing them.

Providing information and recommendations.

How can folks have such fragile egos that recommendations from experts are seen as threatening?

Do you really think people don’t know the purpose of seat belts and helmets?

Because I was curious if you really think that the people don’t know about seatbelts and helmets.
Lots of people probably don't know the statistics, actually. It doesn't hurt to have an informed discussion about how they save lives when a 16-year-old is getting their license for the first time, or their first motorcycle.
