  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

and the second?
Not my problem. I come from a skilled trades background. Now I train people for the skilled trades for which there is a shortage of applicants. If native-born Americans don't want to step up for this training I will happily accept an immigrant.

Who is this “us” you’re talking about? I thought you were born here.
You really need it explained that I am the SON of legal immigrants. My family. Us, we are one family. Us. Get it now?

It’s “digs” like that that show the fallaciousness of your argument. The right absolutely does use legal immigrants as scapegoats, as the business with Springfield showed, and no amount of hemming and hawing on your part will change that.
Only in the eyes of the left. Only in their eyes.

It is why the percentage of minorities rose higher for Trump than for any Republican in the last four decades.

You seem to be trapped in your narrative.

Please stay there, I believe it will insure Republican majority for years to come.

Right, you’re the son of immigrants. Just like I’m the grandson of immigrants. You’re not an immigrant. (And neither am I) You and I followed the same path to citizenship: the one that passes through the birth canal. You complained about the left lumping together legal and illegal immigrants, but you’re lumping together immigrants and natural born citizens whenever it appears to suit you.

That is demonstratively false and a grave insult to each of us who came in legally. illegal aliens did not build this country, we did.
Do your research. I'm afraid you are gravely mistsken. But you will learn the hard way, through your pocket book. Thanks for engaging.

You personally pushed some of the lies about those Haitians that Trump et al were spreading. Are you denying that?

But the left doesn't seem to understand that. It's an insult to everyone of us who came to America legally, who followed the laws and processes to become part of this society. For the liberal to lump us in with illegal aliens is degrading and insulting.

It's digs like this that
These insults and digs are coming from MAGA Republicans like Laura Loomer:

"Our country was built by white Europeans, actually. Not third-world invaders from India," Loomer said. "It's not racist against Indians to want the original MAGA policies I voted for. I voted for a reduction in H-1B visas. Not an extension."

Both of which are here legally

Illegal Aliens are not. And that is the difference.

You can change the name of an illegal alien to whatever you please. Calling an illegal alien an immigrant does not change the fact that they are, by definition, illegal aliens.

That’s nice. It does not change the fact that your side, including you personally at times, have used legal immigrants as a scapegoat. It is demonstrably not true that your side restricts its complaints to illegal immigrants.

Then you should close the thread because there is no civil war in the Republican Party - what there is - is the ability to voice disagreements. WAPO's opinion piece behind the paywall (I would not pay for this kind of trash) - is skewed and once again attempting to paint the administration in the worst possible light. Not surprising.
This isn't about a civil are in the GOP or the conservative movement. It is specifically about splits in MAGA. Those hard core people who specifically identify with Trump and his rhetoric rather than other tradititional GOP/Conservative issues. This "dust up" is occurring at an very Trump aligned group's event

ConservativePAC

(Just the splash page shows how Trump oriented the are. Compare this to more long lived groups like Heritage or AEI or the old groups of the Religious Right.)

It's not like what appears to be nothing but tribe speak in the Democratic world where you follow the tribe or get pushed out - i.e. Bernie Sanders etc.

Conservative do not have a problem with immigrants either - the President is married to one - he has two as DOGE Advisors and one is about to be Secretary of State.

It's obvious that both Musk and Vivek support them. Read the OP.

What they and 80% of Americans in general have a problem with is illegal aliens.
The issue is that the MAGA faction that is against *all* immigration is learning the hard way that Trump and his big business pals (including, and especially, the wealthy MAGA that are new to conservative/GOP politics like Musk et al.) *want* immigration they control to keep their businesses profitable. (Even if they do plan to deport illegal border crossers and over stayers.) The nativist MAGA are not having this and *that* is the battle that is breaking out.

A MAGA ‘Civil War’ on X between Musk and the far right over H-1B visas

The online rift over the H-1B skilled-worker visa program signifies a potential wedge between Trump’s core base and his new Silicon Valley supporters.

The controversy spread across X after far-right activist Laura Loomer on Monday criticized Trump’s choice to name Sriram Krishnan, a technology entrepreneur and investor who was born in India, as his senior policy adviser on artificial intelligence. She pointed to Krishnan’s previous support for removing some caps on green cards and easing the ability of skilled foreign workers to come to the United States. The policy is “in direct opposition” to Trump’s agenda, Loomer wrote.

Musk, who once held an H-1B visa and has relied on the program to employ thousands of Tesla employees, said recruiting foreign workers is a crucial way technology companies recruit the best engineering talent to compete globally. “The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low,” Musk wrote on X on Christmas. “If you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be.”

Trump has offered few specifics about how he will address high-skilled immigration in the tech industry during his second term.

On a June episode of the “All In” podcast, which is co-hosted by Sacks, Trump said he would automatically give a green card to every international student with a college diploma.

Technology companies are particularly reliant on H-1B visas — which are capped at 85,000 new visas annually — to help recruit talent. Amazon, with 3,871 new H-1B employees, had the most approved new petitions in 2024, according to data compiled by the nonpartisan organization National Foundation for American Policy. Google had 1,058 approved applications, and Tesla had 742, the data showed. (The Washington Post is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.)

Vivek Ramaswamy Says America Doesn’t Have Enough Engineers Because We Mocked Steve Urkel

America loves jocks [and prom queens], and that's why we don't have any good engineers... or something.

View attachment 359135

The West is decadent. We must import superior foreign culture.

Now Ramaswamy and his fellow Trump-aligned tech bros have taken to defending immigration programs for skilled workers and students as they find themselves at odds with the nationalist front of the MAGA movement. This was bound to happen, it’s just a little surprising that the war broke out before Trump even took office—and on Christmas day, no less.

Elon Musk’s Critics Stripped of Verification Badge After Publicly Challenging Billionaire

Trump ally Laura Loomer, New York Young Republican Club president Gavin Wax, InfoWars host Owen Shroyer, and the pro-Trump ConservativePAC were all stripped of their verification badges after criticizing Musk’s controversial remarks about American workers and foreign H-1B visa holders.

“[Musk] has removed my blue check mark on X because I dared to question his support for H1B visas, the replacement of American tech workers by Indian immigrants, and I questioned his relationship with China,” wrote Loomer in a post on Musk’s social network X, formerly known as Twitter:

Elon has decided to retaliate by removing my blue check and demonetizing me.

In another post, Wax joked, “Okay let me try this and see if I get my badge back: Americans are stupid and lazy and have created nothing. India is a superpower and has the smartest and best talent the world has ever seen. America needs 1 billion new migrants to bring us the fruits of civilization. We are stupid and must repent!”

--

Not a part of DOGE (I hope), but I can't help dunking on convicted felon Dinesh D'Souza:

Dinesh D’Souza Declares ‘There Are Good and Bad Indians’: ‘I’m Obviously One of the Good Ones’

D’Souza made his declaration just a few days after President-elect Donald Trumpselected Sriram Krishnan to serve as senior White House policy advisor on artificial intelligence. Krishnan’s elevation sparked a backlash from the far right, which has targeted Krishnan for his race and views on immigration.
I don't really see the civil war.

Trump has never claimed that we cannot hire skilled workers from other countries.

Lots of people have criticized Musk on X who still have blue checks.

Is the controversy that some people who support Trump have come to believe he stood for things that he never did?

How is that a "civil war"?

Curious - regrding the quote from Vivek in the OP

What part is wrong?

One of things my wife I did, way back in the 90's and early 2000's was restrict television for our children to maximum an hour on week days and two hours on weekends. It made them read and play games with each other. There were no sleepovers and not one of them had a phone before 16. And their first phone was not a smart phone.

I think he a has valid point.
America doesn't value educational excellence....and a lot of it starts with poor parenting.

Prove it. That is a false statement.
You parsed the sentence incorrectly. He was referring to the subset of MAGA that is opposed to all immigration, not saying that all of MAGA opposes it.

Certainly I think we can and should have (as we do!) 'two lanes'. One for temporary agricultural guest workers, and one for skilled employees. We just need to work on figuring out the correct width of each of those lanes.
There seems to be far more than the two lanes for overall legal immigration. Family members, investors who bring jobs, ministers, refugees, and even entertainers/pro sports people.

It seems [?] we have not had a thread specifically about Trump's pledge to "end birthright citizenship", but it does seem relevant to the 'nativist' side in this MAGA schism.

Inside the Trump team’s plans to try to end birthright citizenship

President-elect Donald Trump’s team is assessing multiple options to fulfill his long-promised pledge to end birthright citizenship, according to two sources familiar with the discussions, teeing up a legal fight with the expectation that the Supreme Court would ultimately have to rule on the matter.

Trump has railed against birthright citizenship, which is protected by the 14th Amendment, for years and suggested he’d use executive action to ban it.

Trump allies argue that the 14th Amendment has been misinterpreted and doesn’t apply to children born in the United States to undocumented parents. Some immigration hardliners have argued that children of undocumented immigrants are not “subject to the jurisdiction” of the US and shouldn’t be considered citizens under the Constitution.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said Trump’s arguments for ending the right were “typical outlier extremist type of argument” that “won’t fly.”

“We are definitely going to be suing him in court if there’s an attempt to deport US citizens,” he told CNN.

--

And the party of family values is absolutely planning to deport US citizens for the good of the family.

Family detention, raids and ‘no price tag’

Trump and Homan have repeatedly said that even U.S. citizen children of non-citizen parents are expected to be detained and deported along with their families, and that it will be up to families whether to be deported together or remain separated.

Nope, I sure did not. I pointed out the latest bogeyman being talked about.

Show me one person on the Presidents team just won. That’s saying they want to stop all immigration and you’ve proven your point.
