My wife’s obsessed with Shrove Tuesday! We were out and had a busy day that day, but she insisted on making pancakes just before midnight!
Blessed Lent! :)

If anyone is interested in chatting with other Lutherans and those interested in Lutheranism check out the Lutheran Reading Room on Discord. We are working through the Book of Concord through Lent and will select another title for "buddy reading."

Cognac. It's very difficult to get any cognac where I live. However, I was in the vicinity of the only upscale liquor store in a 3 county area today and thought to myself, your birthday is coming up, buy something nice. I left with their last bottle of Remy Martin 1738.

Aiming to take my kids to Ontario in July. Crossing from Detroit to Windsor. Is your side of Lake Erie amenable to swimming at that time?
Absolutely, yes. If there are any it will be posted all over the beach advising not to swim. This almost never happens.

I'm rooting for Edmonton in the Stanley Cup finals. It's just weird when a Southern team, where there's seldom if ever natural ice, wins it. There shouldn't be any hockey teams South of I-40.

Boooo! Florida is crazy for hockey, Tampa sells out essentially all games and have one of the longest (if not the longest) sell out streaks in the NHL. Who cares if we don't have natural ice, it is not like the teams play outdoors (save the couple of curiosity games) anyway?

I am going for Florida, they are due for a cup.

Why doesn't the city get behind the Rays like that Steve? Is it because the Trop is over in St. Pete?

I've been privileged to get some free tickets this year and took my daughters to an MLB game in Cleveland in May. Then I bought tickets and took my mother and daughters to an MLB game in Cincinnati in June. And this month we are getting some free tickets to Pittsburgh. We all thought the game experience was better in Cincinnati. The home team won both times we've gone. Of course, the Guardians are winning a lot this year.

Location is the biggest problem, which is unfortunate since the new stadium (if it gets built) looks like it will be in the same place as the Trop. Truth be told, the Trop is actually a pretty nice stadium. The ring supports are a problem, clearly, but as for game day experience and the actual fan design of the stadium, it is nice. I like it quite a lot and don't have any issues with it. However, St. Pete is across the bay from Hillsborough County, which is the main population center, and across the bay from the toll bridge to Bradenton and Sarasota, which are also large population centers.

These bridges can have epic traffic most days from around 3:30-7pm, people just don't want to deal with that. Even in light traffic it is still a 30-40 minute drive to St. Pete from Tampa. There is a water shuttle in the spring and fall, but it is slow as the state mandates the speed on the bay, so it can take an hour to cross the bay via water (even though the vessels are capable of much faster speeds). Add time to park and wait for the shuttle bus and you are at 2 hours travel from Tampa, easily.

I am a Rays fan, I watch most of the games on TV, but I only go to a handful of games a season. The tickets are cheap, as low as $10 in the lower bowl, but the concessions are expensive. But the drive time is the biggest factor. I just don't feel like driving over there after work and getting back home late after the game.

My first wife had some kin in that area. Her aunt lived in Pinellas Park and we went there for Christmas one year. It was very nice and her aunt was a wonderful cook but it seemed weird having air temperatures in the upper 70s at Christmas time!

Ha yeah, it can be warm at Christmas time for sure. Pinellas Park has some good restaurants, and the only Jollibee in the area!

Thinking about doing a live baseball game one more time this year and taking the kids to Detroit. My mother went up there years ago and was impressed with the new Tigers Stadium. The weird thing, to her, was that Tigers Stadium was sort of the beginning of gentrification for downtown Detroit. In the early days, it was still pretty rough down there.

We could also do Baltimore with only 2 more hours of drive time and then also get the National Aquarium. And my younger daughter's Godmother lives near there. But she's on the outs with her husband, who is in the military special forces. Having prior experience with those types, I don't need this dude showing up to knife fight me because I met his lady face to face.

The congregation we attend when I'm not booked anywhere is St. John's Lutheran. For Advent they've got blue paraments and violet candles, no rose candle for Advent 3. I know how these older congregations usually are though: change averse; and even if I donated a rose candle or a whole new set of Advent candles, they would be stuffed in the basement and use the old stuff as soon as next year.

At least in the Catholic Church, we have purple, purple, pink, purple for the Advent Wreath. The Advent wreath actually started in Lutheranism, IIRC.

I don't know in Lutheran Churches if they traditionally use blue, or same with Anglican?

It's my understanding that in Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, they only use purple and no pink?

I wonder why it's so varied.

Blessed Advent all.

Blue was a more recent innovation that came in about the same time as the 3 year lectionary. Gaudete Sunday also went by the way-side for a while, but seems to be back. We have a Rose candle among the blue ones. We don't have rose vestments/paraments though. It would be nice, but for one or two Sundays each year, it is hard to justify the cost in a shrinking congregation.

No purple? Just blue and rose? Interesting.

Thanks for the reply.
