  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A bishop in Illinois has halted in his diocese a traveling tour of a relic of St. Jude following an “incident” that allegedly took place between a visiting priest and several students.

A statement from Father Michael Lane and Father Gregory Alberts at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Joliet, Illinois, said that on Thursday of this week the parish hosted the arm of St. Jude as part of the relic’s ongoing tour throughout the United States.

A priest with the Canadian order Companions of the Cross was overseeing the relic’s visit through the “Treasures of the Church” ministry, the statement said.

Lawyers for a priest accused of an “incident” which halted a nationwide relic tour say that Fr. Carlos Martins touched a student’s hair last week to build “rapport,” and that Illinois police are investigating the matter only at the insistence of an “outraged father.”

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Joliet told The Pillar Monday that Martins’ attorneys gave an “incomplete” account of a Nov. 21 incident at Queen of Apostles Parish in Joliet, Illinois, adding that the diocese regarded the allegation as a matter of potential “boundary issues,” but “not sexual misconduct.”

Thanks for posting updates. Something very odd about all of this.

Here’s some additional info from Rod Dreher, who is a friend of Father Martins:

I’d like to know more about that girl’s father. It appears he went off the deep end and the parish panicked.
