  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One thing that I see being repeated her writings over and over is the idea that sickness impairs spiritual and moral discernment. I don’t know where she’s getting this idea from. She seems to constantly keep pushing this idea that if a person is not in absolute perfect health then that are incapable of adhering to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they’re incapable of making moral judgments, and they’re unable to understand the scriptures correctly. This isn’t taught anywhere in the Bible. She seems to think that anyone who isn’t keeping her “reformed diet” is diseased and I can’t help but think what kind of diet did Paul have when he was in prison writing his epistles? I feel like this is a big piece of evidence against this claim that she keeps making.

Another thing that I’ve noticed is that her writings seem to have almost a rebuking vibe to them. She often refers to people in her own congregation who aren’t adhering to what she’s teaching. The tone of her writings almost seems to suggest that her congregation was having a hard time accepting her teachings and her objective seems to be trying to convince them of the importance of what she’s teaching. And from what I see in the SDA today they’re not actually adhering to what she wrote either. Many have adopted the Levitican dietary laws instead of Ellen White’s reformed diet and have completely abandoned her reformed dress code.

Ahh yes I understand what you’re saying now. Yeah it’s extremely unfortunate that some manuscripts appear to have additions that were not present in earlier manuscripts. When I first learned of this I was on the edge of infuriated by it. One of the additions is the last portion of The Lord’s Prayer. Like who in the world could have the audacity to edit the words of Christ and on top of that His prayer? The portion “For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever amen” was added. There were several other verses that also appear to be added.

Right on. Apparently, people used to know this about The Lord's Prayer but somewhere along the way this got lost.

She seems to be making a lot of claims that are contradictory to scripture.
Religiious leaders have continually done that for over 2000 years!

Only God is able to reveal truth to a man.

Another interesting thing is the timing of meals - Ellen White made it basically the opposite to what Jesus and the 1st century people did:

Ellen White:
Substantial breakfast and only light dinner (and very early). No alcohol.

Jesus and the NT people:
Light breakfast and the main meal in the evening before sleep. Also frequently with alcohol (wine).

She recommended two meals a day. Which I am not sure how can work, with a plant based diet - to eat enough protein in two vegan meals (and one of them even "light") is basically impossible.

I am reminded of the following passage.

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. (1 Timothy 4:1-3)

One thing I find interesting is that God specifically commanded the Israelites to eat meat during the Passover celebration. It was nonnegotiable.

Yes, and gave portions of the offerings to priests to eat on a regular basis.

Various Scriptures on that point are examined here:

Personally I don’t think that SDA members have departed from the faith, I think their intention is to serve and obey God, they’ve just been deceived on His requirements and expectations.

Yeah that’s another good point. I hadn’t considered the Levitican priestly requirements.

In Leviticus 24 the priests were also commanded to bake 12 cakes on every sabbath and to eat them. Ellen white specifically instructed her congregation not to bake cakes and pies in preparation of the sabbath and not to eat them as well.

I don't really know either. I just know that scripture is there and SDAs and Catholics alike have very unsatisfying answers regarding it.

The main issue is that "those two items" are considered "things demons teach to do"

Something similar happened in the gospels when the apostles asked if Jesus would imitate Elijah and call down fire and kill people. It was okay for Elijah, (in the Old Testament) but demonic if we did it (in the New Testament) .. so it's like that. (of course SDA does not have a dual covenant theological framework.)

Adventism "Health Message" grew out of the 18th & 19th Century view of changing & improving society. As society was looking for ways to improve their health SDA various religious groups embraced these ideas and saw them as part of God's blessing for society. Naturally because they believed in the Bible they turned to the Bible for guidance when the Bible talked about food and health SDA's took it as the guide and God's will for healthful living.

Now combine that with all moral influence theory, social improvement movements and religious groups, such as the Mormons, you have a basis for understanding the SDA "health message".

Genesis. God never created man to eat meat. Creation was always God’s perfect plan before sin. We will not be eating meat in heaven either, everything reverts back to God’s perfect plan.
Bummer...
I was looking forward to some heavenly barbecue sauce.

I actually just barbecued my first pork shoulder last night. Made some really good pulled pork sandwiches. Only took 13 hours to cook lol.

It has been shown SDA’s live 10+ years longer than the average person in the US according to the BlueZone Study so must be doing something right

So what? Dieting is a personal choice. Acts 15 makes it clear the only dietary restriction for Christians is abstention from “food polluted by idols … from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.” The same verse also prohibits sexual immorality, which is why the embrace of homosexuality by the mainline Protestants, who are now embracing transexuality, which is even worse due to the irreversible damage it can cause to the reproductive system, leaving people unable to procreate, and also polygamy and group marriages have been proposed as something that should be tolerated by some of the more extreme churches.

But many members of the SDA, rather than focusing on that issue and on abortion, seems more concerned about what people eat, and when other Christians worship, despite the fact those Christians are not members of the SDA, and many of whom worship on the Sabbath or otherwise observe it, also worshipping on the First Day, the day the universe was created and the day on which Christ rose from the dead, and the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles in the Upper Rome (which still exists, in the Monastery of St. Mark the Evangelist, whose house contained the Upper Room and who thus hosted the twelve disciples and Christ our True God when they celebrated the Last Supper, although it is unclear whether or not he was present, but if he was it would explain how he knew what transpired and would make his Gospel along with that of St. Matthew one of two primary sources.

The SDA also has a reputation for aggressively trying to convert other Christians through negative proselytism, particularly of the Roman Catholic Church and other traditional churches such as Lutherans and Orthodox who also worship in a liturgical manner and who believe in the Real Presence (despite the fact that some entire Oriental Orthodox denominations, such as the Copts, worship every Saturday, and also most Eastern Orthodox have Vespers or All Night Vigils on Saturday).

Amen to that.

I have had diminished appetite lately due to my illness but tonight I ordered a Poke Bowl, which hopefully I will be able to eat. Prayers for the stability of my digestive tract are appreciated.
