Is it ok for Catholics to read devotionals written by Protestant Max Lucado? I have Catholic devotionals but they aren’t as relatable as the Protestant ones I’ve read. I ordered, but then cancelled the order of Max Lucado‘s book God is With You Every Day.

Yep. I see them read all the time amongst the laity. I know there was a group reading (The Purpose Driven Life) in our parish. But I think if it is a study group within the parish, approval must be given first.

It’s just for myself. Not part of a study group.

Well, as I said, you can ask your priest. But I see no harm in it as long as it’s not teaching error.
I’ll read it and if anything goes against church teaching, I’ll disregard that.
This is like when we had a thread about Jesus Calling.

My aunt gave me Safe in the Shepherd's Arms back in 2004 when I made my first Holy Communion.

I find nothing heretical about it.

So read on!

(Sadly, she left the Church and got married to her third husband by a justice of peace, since both of her former husbands are still living. When her third husband passed away, his funeral was at an ELCA Lutheran Church).

Interesting point.

My concern about non-Catholic reading is that it does not help build one's spirit into the Catholic faith.

I have wayyyyyy too many books ... both Catholic and Protestant. I love many authors. BUT by reading many things by many different authors, it has not served to permanently 'stabilize' my faith in Catholicism.

That is a big admission from me to make. And maybe it's not worth the rocks to pound salt with. But it is truth. If one wants to be Catholic, reading Catholic books is the best way.

I do continue to read all kinds of Christian books. But doing so has sometimes made for a confused expression of faith. Just sayin' ...

Yes. I would only recommend to read Protestant material ONLY IF someone is well informed about the Catholic faith to begin with.

Blessings

I actually enjoyed The Purpose Driven Life and didn't find it overly evangelical or Protestant.

I heard from my priest and he said Max Lucado books are very good and that he’s read a few himself. He said that occasionally Lucado will say something about the Catholic Church that isn’t true but probably because he doesn’t understand the RCC . He said that other than that, his books are “great”.

Apparently, he's a member of the Church of Christ, which is very anti-Catholic, so beware.

I googled the question, is Max Lucado a member of the Church of Christ? And it said, no, he’s a member of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio which was formerly known as a Church of Christ. It said that while it’s a COC it’s not a typical COC, which I guess I’d kind of a contradiction. I’m not too worried about it because my pastor gave his approval and when I was Lutheran our Bible Study group was given approval to read one of his books, too. If he says anything derogatory against the RCC I’ll just ignore it.
