WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden took a swipe against Donald Trump’s supporters on Tuesday as he reacted to the Republican presidential nominee’s weekend rally at Madison Square Garden, which was overshadowed by crude and racist rhetoric.

In a call organized by the Hispanic advocacy group Voto Latino, Biden responded to a comic at Trump’s rally who called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” Biden’s initial comments were garbled.

“Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage. Well, let me tell you something, I don’t, I don’t know the Puerto Rican that I know, the Puerto Rico where I’m fr -- in my home state of Delaware. They’re good, decent honorable people,” he said.

The president then added: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”

I said this in another thread, but I will say it again here.

95% of the people at Trump's rally wouldn't have a clue that Puerto Rico has a garbage problem—maybe even a higher percentage than that. He also made a joke about Black people carving watermelons instead of pumpkins for Halloween and a vulgar joke about how Latinos love making babies. When you put his entire act in context, it becomes clear that he wasn't talking about Puerto Rico's garbage problem when he called the country a "floating island of garbage."

No, he is not. Biden is talking about Trump's supporters.

The White House didn't provide the whole transcript of what Biden said, so to make it look like Biden was talking about Hinchcliffe.

But Biden was talking about Trump, when he then moved into this discussion about garbage.

The speaker he is referring to in that sentence is Tony Hinchcliff.

He goes on to say "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter's — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American."

We know President Biden is speaking about Tony Hinchcliff specifically because in that sentence he uses the pronoun "him." If President Biden was talking about all Trump supporters, he would have used the pronoun "their."
